MONTREAL -- They came, they saw, they were conquered.
Goose Bolton and
Kieran McKay each registered hat-tricks as McGill doubled the visiting Trent University Excalibur 14-7 in men's lacrosse at Percival Molson Stadium, Saturday.
The victory moved McGill back into sole possession of first place in the CUFLA East standings with a 6-1 record, four points ahead of Bishop's (4-0) and Trent (4-2).
The Excalibur made the 450-kilometre trip from Peterborough full of vim and vigor, looking to avenge last week's 10-8 home-field loss to McGill. But the Redmen prevailed with a statement victory to kick-off their annual lacrosse Homecoming weekend before a crowd that included more than 30 graduates of the program.
The Redmen won each quarter, leading 3-1 after the first, 7-4 at halftime and 11-5 after three, then took the final stanza 3-2. After a penalty-free first quarter, Trent drew 13 penalties compared to six by McGill.
"We played really well and the key to victory was our depth and composure," said McGill head coach
Tim Murdoch. "A bunch of our freshmen got some playing time and scored. I think that our triple overtime loss at Bishop's the other night set the tone for today's performance."
Also contributing greatly to McGill offensive onslaught was
Liam MacDonald, who tallied twice and added three assists. Single goals were scored by
Patrick Brandell,
Ian Macleod,
Cal Callahan,
Tanner Baldin,
Colton Campbell and
Felix Cote.
Garrett Eddy led Trent with three goals and a pair of helpers. Rounding out the Excalibur scoring was
Pat McCrory (2),
Danny Michel and
Adam Perroni.
All-conference goalkeeper
William Waesche kicked out 16 of 23 shots, many of them acrobatic ones, for the victory. His counterpart
Kyle Holton was beaten for 14 goals on 28 shots and took the loss.
Next weekend, McGill (6-1) will host Queen's (1-4) on Saturday, Sept. 30 at in a 5 p.m. start at Molson Stadium.
