MONTREAL --
Mathieu Lemay scored the late game-winner on a penalty shot as Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières topped McGill 3-2 in the second game of a home-and-home exhibition series in men's hockey preseason play at McConnell Arena on Saturday.
The bitter archrivals each escaped with a 3-2 win on enemy ice as the Pats improved to 158-82-17 lifetime against McGill, including a 64-52-8 mark at McConnell.
The teams appeared destined for another overtime battle after UQTR killed off a double-minor assessed to
Gabriel Slight for butt-ending but a minute later, with just 115 seconds left in regulation, the Patriotes were awarded a penalty shot on a trip from behind by
Jan Kaminsky. Lemay made no mistake, putting the puck past Redmen goaltender
Louis-Philip Guindon with a nice shot to secure the win.
Guindon, a 6-foot-1, 183-pound kinesiology sophomore, stopped 26 of 29 shots in 58:48 before being pulled for the extra attacker in a last-minute comeback bid. His UQTR counterpart,
Sébastien Auger, turned away 26 of 28 pucks faced in the win.
Bruno-Carl Denis had put the Patriotes on the board early with a power-play goal at 1:57 of the first, assisted by
Loik Leveille and
Pierre-Maxime Poudrier.
But McGill's
Alexandre Sills, a 6-foot-3, 213-pound centre from Amos, Que., responded with a power-play marker of his own one minute into the middle frame, set up by
Antoine Dufort-Plante of Montreal and defenceman
Dominic Talbot-Tassi of Mascouche, Que.
Christophe Lalonde of Mirabel, Que., put the Redmen ahead at 9:02 with assists from Kaminsky and
Keanu Yamamoto of Spokane, Wash. However, it only took UQTR 44 seconds to respond and
Olivier Caouette evened things up.
McGill (1-1) continues preseason play with a road trip to Toronto next weekend, where they will pay visits to York (0-0) at the Canlan Ice Sports arena on Sept. 22 at 4 p.m. and Ryerson (2-0) at the MasterCard Centre on Sept. 23 at 4 p.m..
