Talbot-Tassi tallies apple trio as hockey Redmen pounce on Lions

NORTH YORK, Ont. -- Defenceman Dominic Talbot-Tassi of Mascouche, Que., set up three goals and freshman Antoine Dufort-Plante of Montreal netted the game-winner with just 48 seconds remaining as the McGill Redmen rallied to edge York 3-2 in men's exhibition hockey thriller at Canlan Ice Sports Arena on Saturday.

The victory improved McGill's lifetime record to 22-12-6 in 40 meetings with the Lions.

"It was a good game," said Redmen bench boss Kelly Nobes, whose squad came out on top despite being outshot 39-30 and having to kill off eight penalties, including a pair of 5-on-3 opportunities. "York's a pretty good team."

Dufort-Plante, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound forward, prevented overtime by finishing a play with Talbot-Tassi and fellow freshman Michael Cramarossa of Markham, Ont.

York got on the board first with a goal by Reid Jackson at 5:39 of the opening period, but Alexandre Sills, a native of Amos, Que., replied less than five minutes later at 9:40 to tie things up at 1-1. Jackson struck again with the only goal of the second period at 3:09, which put the Lions ahead 2-1 heading into the third.

Dylan Montcalm, a McGill freshman from Drummondville, Que., evened the score at 2-2 off a rebound at 8:12 of the final stanza before Dufort-Plante sealed the win.

Sophomore goalie Louis-Philip Guindon of St. Joseph du Lac, Que., made 37 saves for the Redmen. "Guindon played well," said Nobes succinctly of his 6-foot-1, 188-pound netminder who collected the win. Mack Shields turned away 27 pucks in a losing cause for York.

The Redmen were goalless on six chances with the man-advantage, while York went 0-for-4 on their power-play chances.

McGill takes on Ryerson on Saturday (Sept. 23) at 4:30 p.m. in the Mastercard Centre, which also serves as the training facility for the Toronto Maple Leafs. York faces the Toronto Varsity Blues at 8:30 p.m. that evening.

REDMEN RAP: A number of former Redmen were in town and caught up with Kelly Nobes after the game, including Doug Orr (2001-06), Chad Blundy (2000-05) and Shawn Shewchuk (2003-08)... The entire Redmen squad took advantage of the matinee start time to do some team bonding on Friday evening at the Major League Baseball game between the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue-Jays... Samuel Hodhod, a third-year forward, played on Friday but headed back to Montreal after the game to attend funeral services for his grandfather who passed away earlier in the week.
