TROIS-RIVIÈRES, Que. -- Freshman
Dylan Montcalm of Drummondville, Que., scored shorthanded to force overtime and rookie
Antoine Dufour-Plante of Montreal scored the shoot-out winner as McGill rallied from a 2-0 deficit to edge Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières 3-2 in men's preseason hockey, Friday, at Le Colisée. The Redmen won the shootout 2-0 with markers from Dufour-Plante and and freshman
Keanu Yamamoto of Spokane, Wash.
In the first game of a home-and-home series that returns to Montreal on Saturday, the Redmen outshot their hosts 44-20 but it took until the bitter end for their territorial domination to be reflected on the scoreboard.
It marked a school best fourth road win in as many meetings on UQTR ice, dating back to last season when the Redmen went 5-1 over their greatest rival and swept the Pats in the post-season.
McGill goaltender
Joe Fleschler of Westfield, N.J., played the second half of the contest and stopped all seven shots faced in regulation to collect the victory. The hulking 6-foot-6, 223-pound junior, also stoned both UQTR snipers faced in the shootout. He relieved starter
Louis-Philip Guindon, a kinesiology sophomore from St. Joseph du Lac, Que., who made 11 saves on 13 shots in 32 minutes and 24 seconds.
Gabriel Slight opened the scoring for UQTR with a power-play goal 4:33 into the game. Mathieu Lemay doubled the advantage at 16:41.
Alexandre Sills of Amos, Que., brought McGill within one on the man-advantage at 18:30, set up by
Dominic Talbot-Tassi of Mascouche, Que., and Yamamoto.
After a scoreless second period, Montcalm tied the game at 2-2 with his first collegiate marker at 6:16 of the third, assisted by fellow Drummondville native
Jerome Verrier.
A five-minute overtime period produced just three shots on goal and solved nothing, so the teams moved on to the dreaded shootout. Yamamoto, McGill's second shooter, scored on a nifty deke, followed by Dufour-Plante, who rifled a wrist-shot to the top corner.
Alexandre Bélanger saved 41 of 43 shots for UQTR in a losing cause.
The archrivals will face-off in a rematch on Saturday (Sept. 16) at 7 p.m. at McConnell Arena. Due to the advance set-up for a Montreal Alouettes game on Sunday, vehicles can park for free at McConnell Arena parking lot, but can only access the venue via the Duluth Street and Fire Station Road entrance (i.e. the east side gate off Avenue du Parc).
