McGill to battle long-time rival Queen's for OUA East hockey title

MONTREAL -- One of the oldest hockey rivalries in the world resumes on Wednesday (Mar. 1) when the No.3 ranked McGill University men's hockey team confronts the seventh ranked Queen's Gaels in a much-anticipated OUA East Division final. The best-of-three series gets underway at 7 p.m. in McConnell Arena, located at 3883 University Avenue, just north of Percival Molson Stadium.

Tickets, which can be purchased online, are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors, McGill students and staff. Fans can also catch all the action streaming live on McGill Sports-TV or OUA.tv, with live stats updates available online.

Game 2 is scheduled for Friday night (Mar. 3)  at the Kingston Memorial Centre (7:30 p.m.). That night will mark the 142nd anniversary of the world's first organized indoor hockey game, played on March 3, 1875 at the Victoria Skating Rink in Montreal and involved a number of McGill students. If a rubber match is needed, the Gaels return to Montreal on Sunday (Mar. 5)  for a 7 p.m. start at McConnell Arena.

This season, McGill finished atop the OUA East standings with a 21-4-3 record. The Gaels finished six points back, in third place with an 18-7-3 mark.

The McGill-Queen's series is the third oldest ice hockey rivalry in North America, dating back to their first confrontation, a 6-5 Queen's victory in Kingston on Feb. 2, 1895. Since then, the Redmen own a 125-52-2 lifetime record against the Gaels, however, it was Queen's that had the last laugh as they swept the season series with McGill, winning 4-0 back on Nov. 26, 2016 at the Kingston Memorial Centre, followed by a 2-1 victory at McConnell Arena before a capacity Winter Carnival crowd on Jan. 13.

The shutout in the first meeting of the season was the Gaels first against McGill since Oct. 18, 1980 and snapped a 31-game losing streak to the Redmen that dated back to Feb. 6, 2004. In the two head-to-head games this season, Queen's outscored McGill 6-1 but the Redmen had a 58-55 edge in shots.
