MONTREAL –
Michael Peterkin and
Dele Ogundokun each scored a game-high 15 points as the No.7-ranked McGill men's basketball team celebrated "Seniors Night" by toppling Bishop's 89-71 before 404 at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.
McGill, which had a 41-29 edge in rebounding, led 27-16 after the opening quarter, extended that to 51-33 by halftime and held a 74-49 advantage after three stanzas.
Peterkin, 6-foot-6, 200-pound senior from Toronto, Ont., saved his last home game for his best outing, adding seven rebounds and five assists in 29 minutes of court-time. Ogundokun, who will be returning to play a fifth year, also impressed, posting seven rebounds, six assists, three steals and one block. The Hamilton, Ont., native shot an efficient 5-for-6 from the floor including a 2-for-3 performance from downtown. He also sank three of his seven free-throws.
"I thought we played well," said seven-year McGill bench boss
David DeAveiro, who improved his career coaching record to 348-220, including a stint with the Ottawa Gee-Gees. "We did a lot of good things today and things that we have been emphasizing in practice."
Two other Redmen reached double figures in scoring. Point-guard and graduating senior
Jenning Leung posted 14 points, shooting 6-for-13 from the field and 2-for-6 from downtown. The Philippines native also added two from the foul-line and dished out seven assists. Teammate
Noah Daoust contributed 10 points, five rebounds, a pair of steals and one assist.
"We try to get everyone involved with good ball movement," added DeAveiro. "We preach to not be selfish and I think that showed tonight with a lot of extra passes for open shots."
Daniel Pieper, the third of four graduating seniors that were honoured with a framed McGill jersey in an emotional pre-game ceremony, got the start in his last home game and posted five points with five rebounds in a season-high 23 minutes.
Regis Ivaniukas, the final senior to be honoured, was unable to dress due to a season-ending shoulder injury suffered in the fall.
"We owe a lot to these kids," noted DeAveiro of his graduating class. "It was unfortunate Regis couldn't play due to his injury but these players are the reason why we've been the team to beat in Quebec the last five years."
Bishop's had five players in double-digits, led by
Alexandre Boisse, who tallied 14 in a losing cause. Teammate
Abdul Kamane posted a "double-double" adding 13 points and 12 rebounds, while
Joany Castor-Thadal, Yassin Naji and Jon Bermillo had 12, 11, and 10, respectively.
The Redmen shot an impressive 47.9 per cent from the field (35/73), went 10-for-27 from beyond the arc and dropped 9 of 13 free-throws. Bishop's shot 39.3 per cent (24/61), made eight of 26 treys and went 15-for-25 from the line.
McGill, which leads the RSEQ conference with a 12-3 record, will now have a four-day break until their season finale in Quebec City versus fourth-place Laval (6-8) on Feb. 23. The cellar-dwelling Gaiters (2-12) have two games remaining, starting at home against second-place Concordia (9-5) on Feb. 22 and at UQAM (7-8) on Feb. 25.
REDMEN RAP: Two starters were scratched for the Redmen, namely co-captain
Francois Bourque (an undisclosed injury) and point-guard
Kendrick Jolin. a 20-year-old freshman from Pte. Claire, Que., who was shaken up in a heavy collision at Concordia on Thursday night. He landed awkwardly on his shoulder and is not expected back before playoffs. It's been a star-crossed rookie campaign for Jolin, who has missed five games with various ailments. In the 10 league contests that he suited up, he averaged 9.4 points, 2.6 assists and 1.6 steals per game, while shooting an impressive 51.8 per cent from the field, a league-leading 48.5 from downtown and 66.7 from the charity stripe.
