Robitaille rumbles as Citadins tumble, swept by volleyball Martlets

MONTREAL -- Team captain Myriam Robitaille of Terrebonne, Que., tallied 12.5 points as No.9 McGill swept the Université du Québec à Montréal 25-16, 25-19 and 25-17 in RSEQ women's volleyball at Love Competition Hall on Sunday.

The Martlets have now swept UQAM in both meetings this year, including a preseason match.

"Offensively we played a good game," said head coach Rachele Beliveau, who improved her overall record to 592-518-2 behind the McGill bench  "The number of kills was spread evenly between many players, which is good. We executed the game plan (superbly, so on paper it looks like the game was easy (with a sweep)... If we continue to be well-prepared and we execute to our capability, we will do really well."

Robitaille, a six-foot middle blocker, earned her points on the strength of nine kills, one ace, a pair of stuff blocks and an assisted block.

Sophomore power-hitter Claire Vercheval of Ste. Julie, Que., followed with 10 points, courtesy of six kills, three aces and a stuff block. She also chipped in a pair of digs. Elisabeth Perrault, a sophomore from Laval, Que., collected six kills, an ace, two stuff blocks. an assisted block, and three digs. Setter Thara Dawoodjee of Ottawa registered 23 assists and 2.5 points.

Émilie Germain-Russell led the Citadins with 11.5 points, including a game-high 10 kills.

The Martlets had a 29-26 advantage in kills, an 8-2 margin in service aces, a 26-21 edge in digs and an 8-4 difference in blocks.

"It's now a question of how consistent we can be in our execution," said Beliveau. "We have young group but if they learn how to be consistent, that will be promising. Our team has to gain confidence and believe in how well we can do if we play the way we should."

McGill (3-1) will play Ottawa (2-4) and Sherbrooke (1-4) next weekend. They will host the Gee-Gees on Friday, Nov. 10 (at 7 p.m.) at Love Competition Hall, then make the two-hour trek to the Eastern townships to play the Vert & Or on Nov. 12.

Prior to that Sunday game, Sherbrooke (1-4) will host.UQAM (1-4).
