Volleyball Martlets soar past Gee-Gees

MONTREAL -- Claire Vercheval of Ste. Julie, Que., scored 14 points as ninth-ranked McGill swept the visiting Ottawa Gee-Gees 25-23, 25-15 and 25-20 in RSEQ women's volleyball, Friday, at Love Competition Hall.

The Martlets are now 4-2 in league play against the Gee-Gees since Ottawa joined the conference last season. McGill had a 36-24 advantage in kills, a 7-6 edge in service aces and a 5-4 difference in blocks. Ottawa held a 42-26 margin in digs.

"We were very confident and played less tensely," said McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau, who collected her 593rd victory in in 1,113 games overall behind the McGill bench. "We're getting used to Ottawa's style of play, which is slightly different than what we do, and we're more in control of what we can do to beat them. The game started really tight and it was a very good game today with a lot of intensity. This was the best overall performance by our team so far, including the defence, the serve receive and the hitting. We were good on all three areas."

Vercheval, a 6-foot-1 sophomore power-hitter, registered 13 kills, one service ace, and chipped in four digs.

Team captain Myriam Robitaille of Terrebonne, Que., followed with 13 points. The six-foot middle-blocker earned her points on the strength of eight kills, three aces, and a pair of stuff blocks. She was also credited with one dig. Elisabeth Perreault of Laval, Que., collected seven kills, one ace and four digs. Sophomore right-side hiter Rowan Fletcher of Montreal recorded three kills, three stuff blocks, a pair of digs and an assist. Erika Cournoyer, a fifth-year middle-blocker from Longueuil, Que., had a game-high five aces.

Libero Marjolaine Ste-Marie had a lofty 2.50 passing ratio (out of 3) and setter Thara Dawoodjee of Ottawa posted a game-high 30 assists, to go with a pair of assists.

"We had good serve reception from Marjo and Thara did a good job today as well," praised Beliveau.

Kaly Soro paced the Gee-Gees with 11 points.

McGill (4-1) visits Sherbrooke (2-4) on Sunday (Nov. 12) at 1 p.m. The Gee-Gees (2-5) are off until next week, when they host UQAM (1-5) on Nov. 17.
