No.3 ranked Carabins blank Martlets in collision of undefeated teams

MONTREAL -- Marie-Alex Bélanger scored 14 points as No.3 Montreal swept ninth-ranked McGill 25-17, 27-25 and 25-15 in RSEQ women's volleyball, Friday, at Love Competition Hall. It was a clash of undefeated teams as the Carabins had won their first three league games, while the Martlets had swept their first two.The Carabins now hold a 3-0 season record over the Martlets, including a pair of preseason contests.

"It was close but not close enough," said McGill bench boss Rachele Beliveau, a former Canadian Olympian whose career coaching record dropped to 591-518-2 in 1,111 contests since taking over the McGill program 27 seasons ago. "We played a little stressed. The first two sets were really good, and the second was really much better, even. I don't know why in the third set we didn't really focus."

Bélanger, a member of the Canadian national team, earned all her points with kills and also chipped in one assist and a pair of digs. Teammate Maude Babin followed with 10 kills and two assisted blocks for 11 points.

"Montreal is a really good team, too," added Beliveau. "For us they're the team that we have to challenge and I think we can do that. We can challenge them and we can put a lot of pressure on them. As of now, on paper, they are stronger, but I do believe that we can beat them."

Senior Emilie Matte de Grasse, a 5-foot-10 power hitter from Montreal, led McGill with 13 points, all from kills. Senior Myriam Robitaille of Terrebonne, Que., followed with 7.5 points courtesy of five kills, two services aces and an assisted block.

The Carabins had a 33-29 advantage in kills, a 6-4 edge in service aces and a 5-2 margin in blocks. Both teams managed 15 digs.

The Martlets (2-1) host UQAM (1-3) at 3 p.m. on Sunday (Nov. 5). Montreal (4-0) plays Sherbrooke (1-3) that same afternoon.
