Captain Robitaille leads Martlet volleyball sweep over Citadins

MONTREAL -- Team captain Myriam Robitaille of Terrebonne, Que., scored 13 points as 10th-ranked McGill swept UQAM 29-27, 25-20, 25-23 in RSEQ women's volleyball, Sunday, at the Centre Sportif de 'l'UQAM.

The Martlets have now swept the Citadins in all three meetings this season, including a preseason match.

McGill was trailing midway through the opening set but found its rhythm and never looked back.

"In that first set, we started to pick up our play really late, but it was key that we were able to adjust and came back," said Martlets head coach Rachele Beliveau, who improved her career coaching record to 595-519-2 overall behind the McGill bench. "The key was controlling their top players. We certainly have a height advantage over them so if we pass well, then we're going to put ourselves in a good position to be successful... the first contact with the ball is obviously very important."

Robitaille, a six-foot middle blocker, earned her points with 10 kills, two aces and a pair of assisted blocks. The French language and literature senior also chipped in with two digs and an assist.

Sophomore Rowan Fletcher of Montreal followed with 10.5 points, on the strength of nine kills, one stuff block and an assisted block. Erika Cournoyer of Longueuil, Que., had 10 points, courtesy of six kills, three aces and two assisted blocks, and added two assists. Senior Emilie Matte de Grasse of Montreal contributed seven kills, one stuff block, an assisted block, six digs and an assist. The 5-foot-10 power-hitter also recorded a 2.05 passing ratio (out of three). Elisabeth Perreault, a sophomore from Laval, Que., had six kills, a pair of stuff blocks, four digs and an assist.

The Martlets relied on a deep roster as sophomore power-hitter Claire Vercheval, the reigning U SPORTS rookie of the year, sat out to rest a minor injury.

"I put some of our younger players on the court for the second set because we had a safe lead," explained Beliveau. "I'm quite pleased with how they performed. We have a lot of players on the bench who can step on the court and give us quality play."

Élisabeth Vallée led UQAM with 10.5 points.

McGill had an 8-6 advantage in blocks while the Citadins had a 39-38 edge in kills, a 55-29 margin in digs and a 7-5 difference in service aces.

"I'm pleased that we're doing really well in our away games," added Beliveau, whose troops have posted a 12-3 road record, including non-conference games. "Sometimes it's hard playing on the road but I've been happy with how we've been able to adjust to other gymnasiums in order to keep performing at a high level."

The Martlets, who improved to 16-6 overall, remain second in the RSEQ conference with a 6-2 record, two points ahead of third-place Laval (5-2), which holds a game in hand.  McGill will host Sherbrooke (2-6) Friday, Nov. 24 at Love Competition Hall with a 7 p.m. tipoff. UQAM (1-8) visits Laval on Nov. 25.
