Volleyball's Vercheval virulent as Martlets sweep Sherbrooke

MONTREAL -- Claire Vercheval of Ste. Julie, Que., collected 14 points as 10th-ranked McGill swept Sherbrooke 25-18, 25-20 and 25-14 in RSEQ women's volleyball at Love Competition Hall on Friday.

It marked the second consecutive sweep for the red-hot Martlets, who have won five of their last six contests, improving their second-place standing to 7-2 in the RSEQ conference.

"We started the game aggressively and that allowed us to score five points in a row," said McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau. "Then we played the whole game like that. Even though we had a few downturns, they didn't affect us too much. Sometimes you sit on your lead when you're ahead but what I really liked today was that from beginning to the end, everybody was intense and played hard."

Vercheval, a 6-foot-2 power-hitter, earned her points on the strength of a dozen kills and two aces. The physical education sophomore also chipped in six digs and an assist. She was the primary focus of attack as the Martlets were without senior middle-blocker Myriam Robitaille, who suffered an undisclosed injury last week.

Emilie Matte de Grasse of Montreal contributed six kills and three aces. The 5-foot-10 power-hitter also had one assist and seven digs. Erika Cournoyer of Longueuil, Que., registered six kills, an ace and a stuff block. Mila Krunic of Oakville, Ont., and Rowan Fletcher of Montreal each recorded seven points. Krunic, a junior middle blocker, had six kills and an ace, while Fletcher, a sophomore right-side hitter, had five kills and two aces, along with eight digs.

Setter Catherine Duchaine of Montreal racked up a game-high 33 assists, along with five digs, two kills and an ace.

The Vert & Or were led by Sarah-Jane Meunier-Bédard's 13 points.

The Martlets had a 37-24 advantage in kills and a 10-7 margin in service aces, while Sherbrooke had a 6-1 difference in blocks. Both teams managed 42 digs.

McGill (7-2) next plays Laval (5-2) on Sunday (Nov. 26) at 2 p.m. at Love Competition Hall. Sherbrooke (2-7) gets a week off before visiting Laval on Dec. 1.
