Second-ranked Carabins volleyballers bounce Martlets in battle of the mountain

MONTREAL -- Marie-Alex Bélanger registered 19 points as No.2 ranked Universite de Montreal defeated 10th-ranked McGill 3-1 in RSEQ women's volleyball, Friday, at CEPSUM. Set scores were 25-15, 25-20, 22-25 and 25-9.

The Carabins improved to 4-0 over the Martlets this season, including two preseason matches. U de M had a 50-43 edge in kills, an 11-2 advantage in both service aces and blocks, and a 54-46 margin in digs.

"There were only two sets we played well in, the one that we won and one where we were close," said McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau. "But the other two sets were tougher, mostly because of our (poor) serve reception. In order to beat a strong team like Montreal you have to have consistent play.

"If our serve receive wasn't there, it's not that Montreal was scoring on the first ball, but as a consequence we wouldn't be in an optimal position to score," she explained. "When we had good passing, all options were open at the net and we scored a lot. This performance was better than in our first match against the Carabins (a 3-0 loss on Nov. 3) but we need to be more consistent. If Montreal is playing well, then we can't afford to make many mistakes. If they're playing poorly then we can take advantage of the opportunity but if not we have to make sure we're consistent."

Bélanger earned her points on the strength of 15 kills, two service aces, one stuff block and a pair of assisted blocks. She also added 11 digs.

Three other Montreal players reached double-digits in scoring. Adryanna Dorismond-Rodrigue recorded 13.5 points, Camille Santerre had 13 and Maude Babin had 10.

Team captain Myriam Robitaille of Terrebonne, Que., led McGill with 16 points. The six-foot middle blocker registered 14 kills, an ace and a stuff block, and chipped in three digs. Emilie Matte de Grasse of Montreal followed with 11.5 points, courtesy of 10 kills, an ace and an assisted block, along with eight digs.

The Martlets (5-2) next visit UQAM (1-7) on Sunday (Nov. 19) at 1 p.m. while Montreal (7-1) faces Sherbrooke (2-5) that afternoon.
