SHERBROOKE -- Sophomore
Claire Vercheval scored 15.5 points and senior
Myriam Robitaille added 15 as the visiting McGill Martlets defeated Sherbrooke 3-1 in RSEQ women's volleyball, Sunday. The Martlets won by set scores of 27-25, 19-25, 25-19 and 25-19 in a game that took one hour and 43 minutes to play.
The result extended McGill's win streak to three and gave the second-place Martlets (5-1) a six-point bulge over fourth-place Sherbrooke (2-5) in the league standings.
Sherbrooke led 8-7 in service aces, held a narrow 99-96 margin in digs and an 11-7 advantage in stuff blocks. McGill had a 43-40 edge in kills,
"We struggled at times but didn't panic when things weren't going as well as planned," said
Rachele Beliveau, who improved her coaching record to 594-518-2 overall behind the McGill bench. "We worked hard and were patient, which allowed us to get back in the game when we needed to.
Vercheval, a 6-foot-1 power-hitter from Ste. Julie, Que., collected a game-high 13 kills, to go along with a pair of aces and an assist block, She added 19 digs.
Robitaille, a six-foot middle blocker from Terrebonne, Que., registered 11 kills, one ace, two stuff block, a pair of assisted blocks and six digs. She had a kill percentage of .400 and a 33 per cent kill efficiency.
Sophomore
Rowan Fletcher, a six-foot right-side hitter from Montreal, came off the bench to produce here most effective game of the season. She posted 10 kills, one block and 10 digs. She passed for a 2.19 ratio (out of 3), along with a .417 kill percentage and a 38 per cent efficiency.
McGill setter
Thara Dawoodjee, a sophomore from Ottawa, was credited with a game-high 28 assists, eight digs and a pair of aces. Teammate
Marjolaine Ste-Marie, the libero from St. Lambert, Que., led all players in digs with 26,
Sherbrooke was led by 5-foot-11 junior
Sarah-Jeanne Meunier-Bedard and sophomore
Maude Frechette, who had 14 and 10.5 points, respectively.
McGill (5-1) will now turn their focus on two local "road" games, beginning with a key match-up against the division-leading Montreal Carabins (6-1). The two teams will tango at UdeM's Centre CEPSUM on Friday, Nov. 17 at 6 p.m., before the Martlets play at UQAM (1-6) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Sherbrooke (2-5) will host the Carabins on Sunday.
