Axemen chop down Redmen at Calgary hoops tourney

CALGARY -- Nick De Palma hit five treys and scored a game-high 20 points as the Acadia University Axemen rallied from a 15-point deficit to defeat McGill 95-83 on Day 3 of the Calgary Classic men's basketball preseason tournament, Saturday.

The result avenged Acadia's 84-73 loss to McGill in their last meeting on Jan. 2, 2015, at the Rod Shoveller Memorial tourney in Halifax.

The Redmen led 27-22 after a high-scoring opening quarter and took a 45-32 lead into halftime. But it appeared as different teams came out from the intermission as the Axemen outscored McGill by a whopping 34-17 margin in the third stanza to go ahead 66-62 after three. Acadia also won the final quarter 29-21.

The Axemen shot an impressive 53.8 per cent from the field (28/52), a staggering 78.6 from three-point range (11/14), and 82.4 from the free-throw line. McGill replied on a sub-par 36.1 per cent from the floor (26/72), 28.6 from downtown (8/28) and 79.3 from the line (23/29).

McGill, which finished 1-2 at the tourney, had four players reach double digits in scoring, led by Jenning Leung, a fifth-year senior point-guard from The Phillipines, with 15. Veteran Dele Ogundokun added 13, followed by seniors Sebastian Beckett (12) and Noah Daoust (11). Senior Avery Cadogan and freshman Jamal Mayali added nine apiece.

De Palma was one of five Axemen to reach double figures. He was joined by Trevon Grant and Ben Miller with 17 points apiece, along with Erik Nissen (15) and Mason Middaugh (13).

The Redmen had a 40-31 advantage in rebounds, a 9-3 margin in steals, a 4-3 edge in blocks and a favourable 18-14 difference in turnovers.

McGill dropped to 5-8 overall, including a 1-2 record against Canadian university opponents, now return to the friendly confines of Love Competition Hall for a five-game home-stand. They will host Toronto on Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. and St. F.X. on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.

Acadia (2-1) plays Bishop's at Carleton's House-Laughton tourney in Ottawa on Friday the 13th.
