Double-doubles cause toil and trouble as Martlet cagers overwhelm Ottawa


MONTREAL -- Alex Kiss-Rusk of Beaconsfield, Que., and Marie-Love Michel of Montreal each registered "double-doubles" as the defending national champion McGill Martlets toppled Ottawa 74-44 in women's preseason basketball at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.

The Martlets, who had four players reach double figures in scoring, sprung to a commanding 26-6 lead after the first quarter and held a 44-15 margin at halftime before carrying a 57-30 difference into the final frame.

Kiss-Rusk, a 6-foot-4 centre, tallied 14 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, including 10 in the defensive zone. She shot 5-for-10 from the field and 4-for-6 from the free-throw line, blocked a game-high three shots and stole one ball.

Michel, a 5-foot-9 winger, scored 10 points and corralled a dozen rebounds, 10 of them defensive. She shot 5-for-8 from the floor and had two assists, a block and a pair of steals.

Geraldine Cabillo-Abante, a 5-foot-5 guard from St. Laurent, Que., racked up a game-high 18 points in the contest and grabbed five rebounds. She shot 8-for-17 from the field, including 1-for-6 from three-point range and was 1-for-2 from the charity stripe. The physical education sophomore also had two assists and a steal.

Frederique Potvin of Ste. Julie, Que., rounded out double-digit scorers with 13 points. She shot 5-for-12 from the field, including 3-for-4 from beyond the arc, and brought down a pair of rebounds. The social work senior also stole four balls.

Rookie Charlotte Clayton of Newmarket, Ont., chipped in seven points thanks to 1-for-3 shooting from downtown and a perfect 4-for-4 record from the line, and had a game-leading six steals to go with two rebounds.

The Gee-Gees were led by Amelie Hachey, who managed 14 points.

McGill, which had a 42-34 rebounding advantage, tripled Ottawa 18-6 in steals, doubled them 11-22 in turnovers forced and had a 6-1 margin in blocks.

The Martlets shot 41.2 per cent from the field (28/68), including 24 per cent (6/25) from  three-point range and were 12-for-18 on free throws. Ottawa shot 27.4 per cent from the floor (17/62), including a 4-for-8 record from beyond the arc, and was 6-for-13 from the free throw line.

McGill (8-1) wraps up their preseason schedule against Carleton on Sunday (Oct. 29) at Love Competition Hall in a rematch of last year's U SPORTS semi-final, which the Martlets won 66-60 en route to claiming the national title. Tip-off is lated for 2 p.m.

The Gee-Gees open their OUA campaign on Nov. 3.
