MONTREAL --
Heather Lindsay, a fifth-year senior from Ottawa, recorded a "double-double" as Carleton University edged McGill 55-51 in a women's basketball thriller at Love Competition Hall on Sunday.
The game, which featured six lead changes, was a rematch of last spring's U SPORTS semifinal, which the Martlets won 66-60 en route to capturing their first-ever national title. Despite the setback, McGill closes their preseason schedule with a stellar 8-2 record and will open RSEQ conference play against Laval on Saturday, Nov. 4 with a 4 p.m. tip-off at Love Competition Hall. The Rouge et Or, who McGill defeated 66-55 in the U SPORTS gold medal game, will be on hand to watch the Martlets raise the championship banner.
Lindsay, a 6-foot-3 centre, scored 14 points and gathered 11 rebounds in the contest.
Alex Kiss-Rusk, a 6-foot-4 centre from Beaconsfield, Que., also had a double-double of her own but it wasn't enough to lead her side past Carleton. The psychology senior shot 6-for-9 from the field and 1-for-2 from the free-throw line for 13 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. She also blocked one shot and had a steal.
Teammate
Frederique Potvin, a 5-foot-10 guard from Ste. Julie, Que., led all players with 15 points. She shot 6-for-14 from the field, including 2-for-6 from beyond the arc, and made one of two free-throws. The social work senior also nabbed six defensive rebounds and had four assists.
The Martlets had a 22-17 advantage after the opening frame and held narrow 31-30 and 45-44 leads after the second and third stanzas before Carleton took control of a defensive-minded fourth quarter, out-pointing their hosts by a tepid 11-6 margin.
McGill had a 39-38 edge in rebounds and the only blocked shot of the game. The Ravens had a 9-4 margin in steals and a favourable 15-9 advantage in turnovers.
The Martlets shot 37.9 per cent from the field (22/58), went 3-for-17 from beyond the arc and drained just 4-for-11 on free throws. Carleton shot 28.6 per cent from the field (20/70), going 3-for-13 from downtown and was 12-for-16 from the charity stripe.
The Ravens open their OUA campaign against Guelph on Friday, Nov. 3.
