Talbot-Tassi nets OT winner as McGill quells Queen's in hockey thriller

KINGSTON, ONT -- Defenceman Dominic Talbot-Tassi scored at 2:56 of sudden-death overtime to give No.5 ranked McGill a hard-earned 3-2 road victory over Queen's in a spirited OUA men's hockey game at the Kingston Memorial Centre, Friday.

It was the first meeting between these long-standing rivals since the Gaels swept McGill 2-1 and 4-2 in the OUA East final last spring. McGill improved their lifetime record against the Gaels to 126-54-2, including a 55-34-2 mark in Kingston since the two first crossed paths way back in 1895.

Talbot-Tassi, a civil engineering junior from Mascouche, Que., leads all OUA blueliners and ranks seventh in the league scoring race with eight points and three goals in seven games. In 95 career contests with the Redmen, he has registered a 23-86-109 record, two points ahead of Mike Babcock, the Toronto Maple Leafs head coach, who tallied 107 career points in four seasons patrolling the Redmen blueline from 1983 to 1987.

Jan Kaminsky, a senior from Kennesaw, Georgia, tallied his first of the season at 5:01 of the first period on a nifty three-way passing gem with Samuel Tremblay and defenceman Nathan Chiarlitti.

That goal stood up until the final stanza, when rookie Jaden Lindo evened the count for Queen's at the 4:50 mark. Less then two minutes later, Freshman rookie Quinn Syrydiuk of Toronto replied to regain the lead for McGill. A late marker by Gaels senior Darcy Greenaway at 18:11 of the third period forced the 3-on-3 overtime session.

The shots were 34-34 with Redmen sophomore Louis-Philip Guindon making 32 saves for the win and Queen's junior getting a surprise start ahead of senior Kevin Baillie. Brennan made 31 saves in a losing cause.

Queen's, which was the least penalized team in the 20-team league last season, took 22 of 28 penalty minutes called in the game. But the Redmen couldn't capitalize, going 0-for-4 on the power-play. The Gaels were 0-for-1 with the man-advantage.

McGill, which leads the OUA East with a 6-1-0 record, sits four points ahead of the third-place Gaels (3-0-2) and will look forward to the rematch on Jan. 12 in Montreal.  In the meantime, the Redmen will look to extend a four-game win streak when they head to Ottawa for a Saturday (Oct. 28) soiree against the Gee-Gees (3-1-1) in a 7 p.m. start that will be streamed on OUAtv.

Queen's will host Concordia (3-1-1) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
