Paquin leads as Redmen sink Lakers in college hoops


MONTREAL -- Alex Paquin of Montreal tallied 17 points in a dozen minutes as McGill defeated Nipissing 94-56 in men's preseason basketball, Friday, at Love Competition Hall.

The Redmen jumped to a 24-16 lead after the opening frame and improved to 55-23 at the half before carrying an 84-43 margin into the fourth quarter.

McGill shot a remarkable 49.4 per cent from the field (38/77), including a 41.9 per cent mark from beyond the arc (13/31), and was 5-for-6 from the free throw line (83.3 per cent).

Paquin, a 6-foot, 190-pound point-guard who transferred to McGill this season from American University in Washington, shot 7-for-11 from the field, including 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, and was perfect on his one free-throw attempt. He pulled down two rebounds, and had a pair of steals and two assists.

Jenning Leung of the Philippines followed with 14 points. The fifth-year guard shot 5-for-9 from the field, including a 4-for-8 record from three-point range, and chipped in one assist with two steals.

Francois Bourque of Terrebonne, Que., also reached double-figures with 13 points and corralled a game-high eight rebounds. The fifth-year accounting senior shot 6-for-8 from the floor, including 1-for-1 from downtown, and also had a pair of assists.

The Lakers were led by Ismael Kaba with 15 points and Marvin Ngonadi with 12.

McGill doubled their guests 14-7 in steals and had 2-0 edge in blocks and a 27-12 turnover advantage, but trailed 40-38 in rebounds. Nipissing shot 29.3 per cent from the floor (17/58), including 5-for-27 on three-pointers (18.5 per cent), and was 17-for-25 (68 per cent) on free throws.

The Redmen evened their record at 8-8 overall, including 4-2 vs. Canadian university opponents. They return to the court against Ottawa on Saturday (Oct. 28) at 4 p.m. at Love Competition Hall. The Lakers, who dropped to 1-3 in preseason, open their OUA regular season against Laurier on Nov. 3.
