Paquin rocks, Redmen roll past Gee-Gee hoopsters


MONTREAL -- Alex Paquin of Montreal scored 19 points off the bench as McGill defeated Ottawa 81-60 in men's preseason basketball at Love Competition Hall on Friday.

The Redmen led 24-15 after the first quarter, 43-31 at the intermission and 62-44 after three.

Paquin, a six-foot, 190-pound point-guard, shot 7-for-12 from the field, sank half of his four chances from three-point range, and was 3-for-4 on free-throws. He was also credited with one rebound, an assist and one steal.

Dele Ogundokun, a guard from Hamilton, Ont., followed with a dozen points and pulled down eight rebounds. The fifth-year accounting senior shot 5-for-9 from the field, including 2-for-4 from downtown. He also had three assists and a game-high five steals.

Centres Noah Daoust of Dorval, Que., and Sebastian Beckett of Georgetown, Ont., each registered 11 points. Daoust, an industrial relations senior, corralled four rebounds and collected one assist, a block and a steal. Beckett, an economics senior, also had four rebounds and a steal.

Brody Maracle led the Gee-Gees with 15 points.

The Redmen had a 42-27 edge in rebounds, a 15-8 margin in steals and a favourable 21-17 advantage in turnovers. Ottawa had a 2-1 difference in blocks.

McGill shot 47.9 per cent from the field (34/71), made seven of 21 three-pointers and was 6-for-10 from the free-throw line. The Gee-Gees shot 38.3 per cent (23/60), went 6-for-19 from downtown and 8-for-11 from the line.

The Redmen wrap up their preseason with a 9-8 record and now have a week and a half off before opening the regular season against Laval on Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. at Love Competition Hall.

The Gee-Gees host the Rouge et Or in their final exhibition match on Sunday (Oct. 29).
