OTTAWA -- Senior
Cal Callahan and freshman
Patrick Turner each tallied six points, with four and three goals, respectively, as the McGill Redmen clobbered Carleton 18-5 to wrap up the regular season in men's lacrosse at Raven's Road Field on Saturday.
The Redmen finished atop the CUFLA East Division with an 11-1 record.
McGill took a 4-2 lead after the first quarter and maintained a narrow 7-5 advantage at halftime but blanked the Ravens 5-0 and 6-0 over the final two stanzas.
"Today was really about the depth and talent of our younger players. We rested 14 starters and all four of our captains," noted Redmen head coach
Tim Murdoch. "Our freshmen and second and third-liners played well -- McGill Lacrosse's depth was on display."
Callahan, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound attackman from Glenview, Ill., who majors in economics, scored in each of the first two quarters then tallied a pair in the third.
Turner, an arts freshman from Stouffville, Ont., only played in the second half and was in on six of the team's 11 goals scored during that stint.
Two goals apiece came from
Naoll Degife (2-1-3) of New Westminster, B.C., freshman
Sean Tan of Kensington, Md., and
Kieran McKay of Richmond, B.C.
Rounding out the scoring with singles were
Colton Campbell of Boulder, Col.,
Cyrus Wickersham of Woods Hole, Mass., and
Hunter Zawada of Kimberley, B.C., as well as
Brendan Byrne (1-1-2) of Toronto,
Matt Keresteci of Toronto, both of whom tallied their first career markers.
Hayden Cummings led Carleton with two goals.
Freshman
Gardie Herr of Princeton, N.J., won 15 of 25 face-offs for McGill.
McGill goalkeeper
David Pelliccione, a sophomore from Woodbridge, Ont., got the start and registered his first career win, stopping four of nine shots in the first half. Teammate
Michael Gallo, a sophomore from Glen Rock, N.J., turned away all three shots faced through the final 40 minutes.
McGill (11-1) will host fourth-place Ottawa (4-8) in a sudden-death quarter-final game at Molson Stadium on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. Last year, the Gee-Gees pulled off a stunning 11-10 upset over the first-place Redmen in the same playoff round.
