Leung leads as Redmen rumble over X-Men in college hoops


MONTREAL -- Jenning Leung, a fifth-year guard from the Philippines, scored 16 points as McGill defeated St. Francis Xavier 82-72 in men's preseason basketball at Love Competition Hall on Saturday.

The Redmen led 21-15 after the first quarter, 41-34 at halftime and took a 67-51 advantage into the final frame as they improved their preseason record to 7-8, including 2-2 versus Canadian universities. McGill had a 40-37 edge in rebounds and 9-7 advantage in steals. St. FX had a 20-22 margin in turnovers, while both teams managed three blocks.

Four players -- all seniors -- reached double-digits in scoring for McGill.

Leung, a 6-foot-1, 181-pound guard, shot 5-for-19 from the field, including 4-for-12 from three-point range, and sank two of three free-throws. He pulled down three rebounds, had four assists and a pair of steals.

Point-guard Alex Paquin of Montreal added 14 buckets in 19 minutes off the bench. The first-year transfer from American University in Washington shot 5-for-9 from the floor, including a 2-for-6 success rate from beyond the arc, and was perfect on two free-throws. He also had a pair of assists and stole one ball.

Dele Ogundokun of Hamilton, Ont., scored a dozen points, corralled a game-high nine rebounds  and added one assist and a steal. Noah Daoust, a 6-foot-7, 221-pound centre from Dorval, Que., recorded 11 points, nabbed five rebounds and stole one ball.

Rookie guard Sam Jenkins of Hamilton, Ont., was not far behind with nine points and six rebounds. He earned all his points on treys with a 3-for-5 record from downtown and also managed an assist.

Kevin Bercy led the X-Men with 16 points and eight rebounds.

McGill shot 41.8 per cent from the floor (28/67), 11-for-30 from three-point range (36.7 per cent) and was good on 15 of 21 attempts from the charity stripe. The X-Men shot 33.8 per cent (23/68) from the field, including 7-for-23 from beyond the arc (30.4 per cent), and went 19-for-31 on free throws.

St. FX will take on Toronto on Sunday (Oct. 22) at 12 p.m. at Love Competition Hall.

The Redmen are off until Oct. 27 when they host Nipissing at 6 p.m.
