MONTREAL --
Mélissa Gougeon scored the lone goal as No.10 Montreal edged McGill 1-0 in RSEQ women's soccer, Friday, at Stade Vincent d'Indy.
With three games remaining in the regular season, the Martlets currently have 12 points and sit in the fourth and final playoff spot, but two other schools -- UQTR and UQAM -- also have a dozen points and another two -- Sherbrooke (11) and Concordia (10) -- are within a game's reach.
"We defended pretty well," said McGill head coach
Jose-Luis Valdes. "We had sequences where we were interesting offensively, then we kind of fell into their trap of playing very direct like they do. But a 1-0 game against a strong Montreal team is promising should we meet them in the playoffs. If we do, I think the girls can realise that we're able to play the way we like to play against them. We just need to be able to re-focus and actually do it for longer periods of time."
Gougeon's tally came in the 56th minute.
"We didn't give any clear chances on goal, which is very good," noted Valdes. "They had several corner kicks and we were strong. We were winning the ball, whether it was the keeper or our field players. Then on one of them, we were blocking a shot and then we had the ball at our feet. It was a poor clearance unfortunately that got to the top of the box on the left-hand side, and it was very well struck by Gougeon across the goal into the opposite side of the net."
Martlets goalkeeper
Sarah Dubois, a 5-foot-8 chemical engineering senior from Edmonton, made four saves and was named Game MVP for her side. Her Montreal counterpart,
Claudia Dubé-Trempe, registered one save for the clean sheet.
Defender
Marie-Ève Bernard O'Breham earned MVP honours for the Carabins.
McGill (3-5-2) next visits Bishop's (1-8-2) on Sunday, Oct. 22. Montreal (8-0-3) takes on UQTR (3-5-3) that afternoon.
