KINGSTON, Ont. -- All-star goalkeeper
William Waesche made 14 saves and
Goose Bolton tallied a hat-trick as McGill squeaked past Queen's 8-6 in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association play at Frank Tindall Field on Saturday.
McGill is now 9-1 on the season and sits atop the CUFLA East standings. With just two games remaining in the regular season, the Redmen are looking to clinch the division title and secure a favorable playoff match-up.
The visiting Redmen took a 3-1 lead in the first quarter, a 6-3 advantage into halftime and an 8-5 buffer into the final frame.
Waesche, a fifth-year economics senior from Greenwich, Conn., thwarted multiple scoring chances and was beaten only six times on 20 shots to earn Game MVP honours for the Redmen.
"We played well on defence and Waesche had another spectacular performance," McGill head coach
Tim Murdoch. "Our offence was inconsistent and made several bad decisions, but we have great depth at midfield and attack so we stayed fresh by substituting multiple players."
Bolton, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound attackman from Darien, Conn., scored McGill's second goal of the game in the fourth minute and added another in the 19th. He completed the trio with the game-winner in the 47th minute.
Cal Callahan of Glenview, Ill., notched a goal and an assist in the contest and teammate
Maxime Murdoch of Westmount, Que., recorded a pair of helpers. Rounding out the Redmen scoring was
Alexander Linton of Ridgewood, N.J.,
Hunter Zawada of Kimberley, B.C.,
Colton Campbell of Boulder, Colo., and
Liam MacDonald of North Vancouver, B.C.,
Linton appeared to score a ninth goal for McGill late in the third quarter but his shot was so hard that it ripped through the net and the referee did not see the ball enter the goal. Despite McGill's protests, the decision on the field stood as the league has no instant replay rule.
Losing 'keeper
Thomas Asma allowed eight goals on 14 shots for the Gaels.
Queen's was led by
Dylan Hutchison, who netted a hat-trick of his own and added an assist, meriting MVP status for his side.
Chris Boushy,
Alex Bulla and
Connor Large also scored for the host squad.
Redmen midfielder
Julian Smith-Voudouris of Stouffville, Ont., was 10-for-16 on face-offs.
With two games remaining before playoffs, McGill (9-1) will get a chance to avenge their only loss when they host Bishop's (6-2) in a first-pace showdown on Wednesday, Oct. 18 (8:30 p.m.) at Percival Molson Stadium. In their previous confrontation, on Sept. 21, the Gaiters defeated McGill 12-11 in triple overtime.
Queen's (2-7) visits Trent (9-2) that evening.
