Dele orders up a meaty victory as Redmen sink Citadins in college hoops

MONTREAL -- Four McGill players reached double digits and Dele Ogundokun of Hamilton, Ont., scored a game-high 21 points as the ninth-ranked Redmen trounced the UQAM Citadins 90-59 in men's university basketball at the Centre Sportif, Friday.

The result avenged an 80-77 overtime upset loss to their cross-town rivals on Nov. 17. McGill (5-2) has now won 16 of the past 20 contests against the Citadins (3-4) and holds a lifetime 34-24 head-to-head advantage overall, including a 14-15 road record at UQAM.

Ogundokun, a 6-foot-2 economics student, was lethal from the field, shooting 8-for-12 including a 5-for-8 performance from downtown. His sharp-shooting seemed to fuel every other aspect of his game as the senior guard was credited with seven rebounds, five assists and four steals.

McGill led 17-14 after the opening quarter and 43-28 at halftime. UQAM was unable to mount any sort of comeback as the Redmen upped their advantage to 65-39 going into the final frame.

Among the other Redmen in double digits was Sebastian Beckett, a management senior from Georgetown, Ont., who contributed 19 points, along with seven rebounds and one assist. Noah Daoust, an industrial relations junior from Dorval, Que., scored 10 points and had two blocks, while Michael Peterkin of Toronto tallied 10 points of his own in just 17 minutes of court-time.

Marketing junior Greishe Clerjuste and teammate Misi Boye Jeanneau of Montreal, Que., scored 13 points each to lead the Citadins.

The Redmen shot 47 per cent from the floor (31/66) and sank 11 of 32 three-pointers, while UQAM shot 34.5 (19/55) and netted six of 13 from beyond the arc.

McGill had a 48-29 rebounding advantage but lost the turnover battle 16-11. UQAM managed just four second-chance points compared to 26 by the Redmen.

The cross-city rivals have now split their two confrontations this season and will rendezvous again in less than 24 hours, on Saturday (Jan. 14) at Love Competition Hall with a 6 p.m. tip-off.
