Leung lethal as Redmen hoopsters crush Citadins for weekend sweep

MONTREAL – Jenning Leung, a senior from the Philippines, scored a game-high 24 points as McGill coasted to a 71-49 conquest over the Université du Québec à Montréal in men's basketball at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.

It was McGill's second victory over the Citadins in as many nights, coming on the heels of a 90-59 victory. The Redmen led 13-7 after the opening stanza and 25-22 at halftime before pouring it on in the third quarter outscoring UQAM by a lopsided 27-9 margin. With their subs in the game, McGill won the fourth quarter 19-18.

"We were soft with the ball in the first half," said McGill head coach David DeAveiro. "I challenged them at halftime and they came out more assertive, driving to the hoop to draw fouls."

Leung, a 6-foot-1, 177-pound point-guard, shot 7-for-15 from the floor, including a 4-for-10 performance from downtown. He added six points from the foul-line and collected three rebounds and two steals.

McGill had two other players reach double digits, including 11 points from senior starter Dele Ogundokun of Hamilton, Ont., and 10 from Toronto native Michael Peterkin. Ogundokun also contributed five rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Ibrahima Sylla led the way for the Citadins scoring 14 points while teammate Misi Boye chipped in with eight.

McGill shot 40.4 per cent from the field (23/57) and made eight of 24 from three-point range but struggled from the free-throw line where they sank 65.4 (17 of 26). UQAM responded with a woeful 22.4 per cent from the field (13/58), dropped 8 of 22 from the arc and made 15 of 22 attempts from the charity stripe.

"We are playing really good defence," noted DeAveiro, who's team has held their last three RSEQ opponents to below 60 points a game.  "The guys are starting to understand our defensive game plan and what we are trying to force the other team to run."

The Redmen held a 36-21 margin in rebounds and committed 19 fouls compared to 27 by UQAM.

McGill, which leads the Quebec conference with a 6-2 record, has now won 17 of the past 21 contests against the Citadins (3-5) and holds a lifetime 35-24 head-to-head advantage overall, including a 21-9 home record vs. UQAM.  The Redmen return to action on Jan. 19 when they travel across town to confront arch-rival Concordia (3-3). The Citadins will also be on the road but will battle Bishop's (2-4) on Jan.20 at the Mitchell Gym in Lennoxville, Que.

REDMEN RAP: McGill was without the services of injured point-guard Kendrick Jolin, a 6-foot-2 freshman who has missed four games after appearing to suffer a strained calf muscle in the Jan. 4 game vs. Laval. His status for this coming week is uncertain.
