LENNOXVILLE, Que --
Goose Bolton scored the game-winner and
Spencer Bromley collected six points, four of them goals, as the McGill University men's lacrosse team rallied for an 11-9 road win over Bishop's at Coulter Field, Thursday. The Redmen scored four unanswered goals in the final 11 minutes to turn a two-goal deficit into a two-goal victory and put a damper on a Homecoming kickoff party at BU.
McGill, which has now posted eight straight victories over the Gaiters, Bishop's opened the scoring for the first time in four games, netting the lone first-quarter goal in the contest. They upped the lead to 2-0 then held on for a 4-3 advantage at halftime and a slim 8-7 margin after three stanzas. The Gaiters gave their fans something to cheer about netting the first goal of the final frame to equal their largest lead of the game before the Redmen came storming back.
"We had a very sluggish start, our offence was missing the net from everywhere," said
Tim Murdoch, head coach of the Redmen. "Bishop's was very hungry and opportunistic but fortunately, they only had a one-goal lead heading into halftime. What really ignited the turnaround was our second line, which was composed entirely of freshmen --
Kieran McKay,
Jay Jiranek and
Ian MacLeod. Their line either scored or set up some key goals for us today. They gave us some much-needed spark and that was the difference."
Bolton snapped a 9-9 sawoff with just 1:50 remaining, to finish with two goals for the Redmen. Bromley added his fourth of the soiree into an empty-net to seal the victory. Rookie
Liam MacDonald also tallied twice with singles coming from the sticks of the aforementioned McKay, senior
Rhys Burnell and veteran
Emile Sassone-Lawless who collected four helpers, including a nifty pass on the winning goal.
Cam Bateman scored a hat-trick in a losing cause for the Gaiters who also had goals from
Joel Wright (2),
Andrew Neilson,
Taren Cook,
Rhett Handley and
Reece Tomkow.
Senior
William Waesche made 11 saves for the victory as McGill had a 22-20 advantage in shots on net. Gaiters 'keeper
Matt Wolf, who made a number of key stops in the early stages, took the loss and was also credited with 11 saves.
