Ravens ruffle feathers to edge hockey Redmen in overtime shootout

OTTAWA -- Brett Welychka of London, Ont., ignited a comeback with one goal in regulation and added an insurance marker in a post-overtime shootout as Carleton mounted a third-period rally to defeat McGill 4-3 in men's preseason hockey at the CU Ice House, Friday. The Ravens took the shootout session 2-0.

It was the first meeting between these bitter rivals since Carleton had eliminated the Redmen in two straight games in the OUA East semifinals last season. It also marked the 400th lifetime regular season game in the CIS coaching career of McGill head coach Kelly Nobes, who has a 236-156-8 league record including stints at RMC and Laurier.

McGill held a 3-1 lead midway through the third period when Welychka, the 2016 CIS rookie of the year, initiated the Ravens' resurgence by scoring at 10:03. Minutes later, teammate Alexandre Boivin added a shorthanded marker to tie the game at 13:39.

After two scoreless five-minute overtime periods, Welychka notched his shootout tally as Carleton's second shooter, after Mike McNamee led off and buried his chance.

Simon Tardif-Richard and Daniel Milne missed their shootout attempts for the Redmen.

McGill freshman Alexandre Sills of Amos, Que., had opened the scoring at 7:55 of the opening frame but Carleton's Brent Norris replied at 12:31 to tie the score at 1-1.

Sophomore Jerome Verrier of Drummondville, Que., regained the lead for McGill at 12:39 of the second and Frederic Gamelin, a centre from St-Polycarpe, Que., made it a 3-1 advantage at 17:18.

Nine different Redmen made the scoresheet in a losing effort.

Carleton held a 32-23 edge in shots. Raven netminder Francois Brassard turned away five pucks before being replaced midway through the second stanza by Justin Nichols, who made 15 saves to earn his first career win. Senior Redmen goaltender Jacob Gervais-Chouinard of Sherbrooke, Que., made 28 stops, including five in overtime, and took the loss.

McGill was 0-for-4 on the powerplay and killed off all five Ravens chances but gave up the all-important shorty.

The Redmen, who are 1-1 in exhibition action, continue their preseason schedule in Trois-Rivières on Sept. 21. Carleton hosts Windsor on Sept. 22.
