Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Earl Zukerman

Son of a NHL gun scores shorthanded winner as hockey Redmen triple Pats

TROIS-RIVIERES, Que -- Jan Kaminsky of Kennesaw, GA., scored the game-winner shorthanded as McGill ambushed the UQTR Patriotes with a 6-2 road victory in CIS preseason men's hockey at Le Colisee, Wednesday.

It was the most goals scored by McGill against the Pats in 23 meetings, since a 7-3 win at Trois-Rivieres on Jan. 31, 2012. UQTR leads the all-time series with a 156-77-17 record against the Redmen since the rivalry began in 1969 but McGill is 24-18 in the last 42 matchups.

The Redmen, who finished second to UQTR in the OUA East last season, dominated and held an impressive 48-30 edge in shots. McGill led 1-0 after the first period, 2-1 after two and outscored the Pats 4-1 in the final stanza.

Kaminsky, whose father Yan played for the NHL's New York Islanders in the early 1990s, was one of six different McGill marksmen. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound electrical engineering senior broke open a tight 2-1 game with a back-breaking unassisted shorty just 71 seconds into the final frame. It was his second goal of the preseason and only his fifth career marker in 59 games overall with McGill.

The Redmen had taken a 2-0 lead on goals by freshman Alexandre Sills at 17:12 of the first and sophomore Christophe Lalonde at 12:39 of the second. But the Pats narrowed the gap four minutes later on a power-play goal from defenceman Charles-David Beaudoin.

Nine minutes after Kaminsky made it 3-1 with his unassisted effort, the Pats reduced the lead to 3-2 when Olivier Caouette scored. But the Redmen responded with unanswered goals from juniors Alexandre Tremblay at 14:06 and Daniel Milne on the power-play at 16:08. Rookie Samuel Tremblay added an empty-netter at 19:47.

Freshman goaltender Louis-Philip Guindon, making his first career start at the CIS level, turned aside 28 of 30 shots for the victory. The 6-foot-1, 183-pound science senior from St. Joseph du Lac, Que., was recruited from the QMJHL's Rimouski Oceanic. Pats netminder Alexandre Belanger took the loss. He saved 42 of 47 shots.

McGill was 1-for-7 on the power-play, while limiting UQTR to 1-for-6.

The Redmen, who improved to 2-1 in preseason play, have four exhibition contests remaining before the OUA regular season begins on Oct. 7. McGill returns home for a couple of challenging matchups this weekend. They will host the perennial national champion contender UNB Varsity Reds on Saturday (Sept. 24) at 5 p.m., followed by a rematch against UQTR on Sunday at 2 p.m.
