NORTH BAY, Ont --
Maxime Murdoch and
Goose Bolton each struck for a hat-trick as the McGill University men's lacrosse team inundated the Nipissing Lakers 17-7 at Veteran's Field, Sunday.
It was McGill's 17th consecutive victory in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association regular season and playoff action dating back to their last loss, a 15-12 decision to Guelph in the CUFLA championship gold medal game, Nov. 9, 2014.
The Redmen, who rallied from an early 4-1 deficit, trailed 4-2 after the opening quarter. McGill led 8-5 at halftime and 12-6 after three, then outscorred their hosts 5-1 in the final stanza.
Murdoch, the 19-year-old son of head coach
Tim Murdoch, also set up two other goals, to register five points. A sophomore who majors in international development studies, the imposing 6-foot-4, 220-pound attacker now has six points in two games.
Bolton, an economics junior from Darien, Conn., collected four points in the game and shares the team points lead with six.
Teammate
Liam MacDonald, a management freshman from North Vancouver, B.C., also tallied five points, two of them goals, including the game-winner.
"We got off to a sloppy start but bounced back and played really well," said Murdoch, in his 14th season as bench boss. "Our offence really turned it up as the game wore on. We had the opportunity to play a lot of our young kids and they really produced. It was a lengthy and challenging trip but good to get the long trips out of the way before mid-terms, which is a stressful time. It was also a good opportunity for team bonding, especially coming away with two wins."
Rounding out the scoring for McGill with two goals apiece was
Rhys Burnell and
Kieran McKay, while singles went to
Ian MacLeod,
Matthew Tse,
Spencer Bromley,
Brendan Mullen and
Cyrus Wickersham.
Nick Chaykowsky scored four in a losing cause for the Lakers. Also striking paydirt was
Alex DeGagne (2) and
Kyle Weatherall.
McGil goalkeeper
William Waesche started and saved 11 of 17 shots for the win. He was replaced after the third quarter by rookie
Michael Gallo, who faced one shot and was beaten on the play. Freshman
David Pelliccione played the final 10 minutes and kicked aside both shots faced.
Craig Macdonald took the loss for the Lakers. He was beaten 17 times on 26 shots.
Nipissing (0-2) will host Queen's (0-1) on Sept. 17. McGill (2-0) will put their win streak on the line next weekend when they face two tough opponents in another long road trip. The Redmen will confront Trent (2-0) -- which surprised Bishop's 14-8 over the weekend -- in Peterborough, Ont., on Sept. 17. The next day, McGill travels to Oshawa for an exhibition game against Hill Academy PG, arguably one of the toughest programs that they have ever faced.
