FREDERICTON, NB -- Senior Jack Schembri of Mahone Bay, N.S., scored on a penalty kick as the Dalhousie University Tigers toppled McGill 1-0 in a men's soccer exhibition game at the BMO Centre, Monday, on the UNB campus.

The second-half penalty kick was awarded in the 66th minute when a Redmen defender was called on a hand ball.

Dalhousie 'keeper Tiji Leopold registered three saves for the shutout. Three players shared the net for McGill. Senior Bladen Allan of Vancouver, B.C., got the start and made one save before giving way in the 30th minute to Antoine Marchal, a freshman from Montreal, who was also credited with a save in the middle third. Rookie Lambert Drainville of Montreal came on for the final 30 minutes and took the loss, allowing one goal on two shots.

Both teams struggled to create chances and failed to capitalize on the few opportunities they did create in the first half. The Tigers had chances early, including one shot that struck the crossbar. McGill had opportunities too, including a couple of two-on-ones, after defensive lapses by Dal. The majority of the first half saw play largely concentrated at midfield, neither team able to create dynamic opportunities.

The action turned physical, with both sides making aggressive challenges. This culminated in a 43rd minute altercation which saw players from both sides receiving yellow cards.

Dalhousie will face the three-time defending AUS champion UNB Varsity Reds, on Tuesday afternoon. McGill finishes the weekend in the Maritimes with a 0-1-1 record and completed their preseason schedule with a 2-3-1 mark. They will open the RSEQ regular season at home on Saturday, Sept.3, when they host the Concordia Stingers at Percival Molson Stadium. Kick-off is slated for 8 p.m., following the women's game.
