Field hockey Martlets meet their Waterloo in Toronto

TORONTO, Ont. -- Emma Young of Mississauga, Ont., scored twice as Waterloo defeated McGill 5-0 in OUA women's field hockey at Alumni Field on the campus of York University, Sunday.

Young, a sophomore forward, netted her goals in the 19th and 67th minutes.

Jennifer Mead and Grace Shimokura also tallied, from corners, in the 14th and 31st minutes, respectively. Larissa McLeod rounded out the scoring with a 70th-minute penalty stroke.

Goalkeeper Hilary Neeb of Wellesley, Ont., collected the shutout for the Warriors.

Catherine Friedman of Buffalo Grove, Ill., played the first half in net for McGill and allowed two goals. Teammate Hannah Moore of Chelsea, Mich., allowed three goals in relief.

McGill (0-9-1) next faces Queen's (2-6-2) in Toronto on Oct. 23. Waterloo (2-5-3) hosts Western (1-5-2) on Oct. 19.

Though they sit last in the conference with just two regular-season games remaining, the Martlets have qualified for the OUA championship tournament, Oct. 28-30, for the first time since 2011. The event, hosted by Western University in London, Ont., will be an open eight-team tourney.  The seven teams that compete in the OUA (Guelph, McGill, Queen's, Toronto, Waterloo, Western, York) will be seeded based on their regular season standings.  McMaster, which now operates as a recreational club and did not participate in the 2016 OUA season, will enter the tourney as the eighth seed.  All games will be played at Western's TD Stadium. The two OUA finalists will advance to the CIS championship, hosted by Toronto, Nov. 3-6.
