McGill's Natalie Doehla named U SPORTS field hockey player of the week

TORONTO – Natalie Doehla of McGill University has been named as the U SPORTS women's field hockey player of the week.

A computer science freshman, the native of Stowe, Vt., tallied twice as the visiting McGill women's field hockey team forced a 3-3 stalemate with Queen's on Saturday, Oct. 8.

The weekend's result salvaged a doubleheader - after losing 2-0 in the opener - and was the first point for McGill in the OUA standings this season, halting a seven-game losing streak. The Martlets, who have netted only four goals in eight games, opened the scoring for the first time this season when Sandrine Brien struck in the 14th minute of play.

Doehla then put McGill ahead 2-1 in the 26th minute. The rookie attacker scored again to give the Martlets a 3-2 lead in the 50th minute. McGill took the lead on three occasions, but each time the Gaels rallied to tie the game. The Martlets will conclude the regular season next weekend with a long road trip to McMaster on Oct. 14 and Western on Oct. 15.

Other U SPORTS athletes of the week announced today include
Jake Lee (UBC; men's hockey), cross-country runners Jessy Lacourse (Laval) and Riley Stuermer (Alberta), soccer players Christina Gentile (StFX) and Christopher Campoli (Ontario Tech), in addition to Savanna Collison (Lethbridge; women's rugby).

Doehla is the third McGillian to win a national weekly award from U SPORTS this season, joining cross-country runner Mathieu Baudet (Oct. 5) and soccer goalkeeper Ludovyck Ciociola (Sept. 20). McGill has also merited two RSEQ athlete-of-the-week awards, namely Elizabeth Ling (swimming, Oct. 12) and Ludovyck Ciociola (soccer, Sept. 20).
