Leung lights out as sharp-shooting Redmen topple Toronto

OTTAWA – Jenning Leung scored a game-high 28 points as McGill hung on for a 72-67 win over Toronto during the second day of competition at the annual Jack Donohue men's basketball tournament at Montpetit Hall, Saturday.

The Redmen, who took care of Waterloo 84-70 on the first night of the tourney, are now 6-1 versus Canadian university opponents in preseason play.

Leung, a 6-foot-1, 177-pound psychology senior, shot 10-for-17 from the field, including a ridiculous 7-for-8 performance from beyond the three-point arc. The Philippines native sank one of two free-throw attempts and also added six rebounds, three steals and one assist.

McGill came out of the gate strong and led 27-17 after the first quarter and 47-31 at the half. The Redmen padded their lead to 61-43 after the third frame before the Varsity Blues ignited on offence outscoring McGill 24-11 in the final stanza but it was too little, too late. The Redmen had a 46-25 margin in rebounds and a 7-4 edge in blocks. Toronto held a 21-13 advantage in turnovers.

Francois Bourque, an accounting senior from Terrebonne, Que., was the only other Redmen to reach double digits in scoring. He contributed 18 points, on 6-for-9 shooting from the field, including 1-for-1 from three-point range. He was also 5-of-8 from the charity stripe and pulled down eight rebounds to go along with three assists.

Devin Johnson led the Varsity Blues with 22 points in 30 minutes of playing time, followed by Manny Sahota and Reilly Reid with 17 and 15 points, respectively.

McGill shot 41.7 per cent from the floor (25/60), 11-for-22 from the three-point range (50) and netted 11 of 17 chances from the stripe. Toronto shot 31.7 per cent (20/63), made eight of 20 from beyond the arc (40.0) and shot 76 per cent on free throws (19-for-25).

The tournament wraps up Sunday with McGill taking on the host Gee-Gees at 4 p.m.
