Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Ryne Bondy

Jolin and Leung named tourney all-stars but ice-cold Redmen hoopsters out-galloped by Gee-Gees

OTTAWA. – A well-balanced Gee-Gees attack was too much for McGill to handle, as Ottawa dominated the Redmen 73-43 to close out the Jack Donohue men's basketball tournament at Montpetit Hall in the nation's capital on Sunday.

Forwards Jean Pierre-Charles and Mackenzie Morrison both put home 11 points for Ottawa while Brandon Robinson helped with nine. Veterans Caleb Agada and Broady Macacle were not far behind with eight apiece.

The Gee-Gees were clicking from start to finish. They had a 14-12 lead after the first quarter and extended that to a 32-22 margin at halftime. An even stronger third quarter increased the Ottawa lead to 56-32 going into the final frame where they went into cruise control.

McGill was severely outrebounded 34-20 and lost the turnover battle 19-15.

The Redmen were led by freshman Kendrick Jolin, a 6-foot-2 guard from Montreal, who scored a game-high 15 points, on 5-of-7 shooting from the field which included a 4-for-4 performance from beyond the arc. The arts major also added two steals and two assists in 25 minutes of court time.

Jolin and teammate Jenning Leung were both named to the all-tournament team. Over the three contests, Jolin tallied 30 points and nine rebounds with four steals and 13 assists. He shot 10-for-20 from the floor, 9-for-13 from three-point range and 1-for-2 from the charity stripe.

Leung, a 6-foot-1 senior guard from the Philippines, scored 49 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to go along with five steals and three assists. He shot 18-for-41 from the field, including 9-for-14 from the arc, and went 4-for-7 from the line.

The rest of the Redmen struggled from the field as the team shot just 28.3 per cent from the floor (15/53), sank eight of 20 attempts from three-point range, and was only 5-for-16 from the stripe (31.3 per cent). Ottawa shot an efficient 52.7 per cent from the field (29/55), 31.6 from beyond the arc (6/19) and went 9-for-18 on their free-throws.

McGill, which posted an 8-5 preseason record, will now turn their attention to league play where they will officially begin their 116th season against visiting Laval in the RSEQ opener on Nov. 10 at 8 p.m. in Love Competition Hall.
