Carabins clip Redmen in crucial soccer matchup

MONTREAL -- Grayg Noireault scored in the 77th minute as the Montreal Carabins dealt a blow to McGill's playoff hopes with a 1-0 victory in men's soccer at Percival Molson Stadium, Friday.

Noireault was assisted on the play by Hicham Manaa.

The loss leaves McGill on the outside looking in for the final playoff berth in the RSEQ conference. The Carabins improved to 5-4-2, moving into the fourth and final berth, two points ahead of McGill (4-4-3) with one game remaining before post-season play.

Freshman McGill keeper Antoine Marchal of Montreal turned away eight of nine shots in the loss, while his Carabins counterpart, Louis-Philippe Simard, stopped all eight shots faced.

Alexandre De Santis, a senior Redmen midfielder from St-Mathias-sur-Richelieu, was ejected in the 78th minute after being assessed two yellow cards.

Montreal led 24-13 in shots, had a 2-0 advantage in corners, and committed eight fouls to McGill's 11.

In order to qualify for the post-season, the Redmen must win their road game at Concordia on Sunday at 3 p.m., then wait and hope for the Carabins to lose their road game against division-leading UQAM (5-0-6) at 8:30 p.m.
