MONTREAL -- Senior guard
Jenning Leung scored a game-high 24 points as the McGill Redmen cruised to a 79-59 victory over UBC-Okanagan in men's exhibition basketball action at Love Competition Hall, Friday.
It was the third straight win for the Redmen, who now move to 5-1 in pre-season play versus CIS opponents.
Leung, a native of Philippines, shot 8-for-15 from the field, including 5-for-11 from beyond the three-point arc, and sank three of four free-throw attempts. He also nabbed five rebounds and had two steals in 34 minutes of court time.
McGill led from start to finish. They had a 21-11 edge after the first quarter, a 42-26 lead at halftime and extended that to 59-42 after three. McGill tallied 17 points in the third quarter, their only sub-20-point stanza.
Uncharacteristically, the Redmen were out-rebounded 37-29 but had a whopping 9-0 advantage in blocks.
Leung, a psychology senior from the Philippines, shot 8-for-15 from the field, including 5-for-11 from three-point range. He also went 3-for-4 from the foul-line and added five rebounds, two steals and a block. Junior
Noah Daoust of Dorval, Que., was the only other Redmen player to reach double-digits in scoring dropping 13 points in 33 minutes of court time. He went 5-for-11 from the floor, 1-for-5 from downtown and 2-for-4 from the charity stripe. The industrial relations major also contributed four rebounds, three assists, two blocks and one steal.
Aldrich Berrios led the Heat with 13 points in 36 minutes off the bench, followed by
David Manshreck and
Matt Lafontaine with 12 points and 11 points, respectively.
McGill shot 44.4 per cent from the floor (28/63), 15-for-39 from the three-point range (38.5) and netted eight of 16 chances from the stripe. UBC-Okanagan shot 33.9 per cent (20/59), made eight of 23 from beyond the arc (34.8) and shot 57.9 per cent on free-throws (11-for-19).
The Redmen will battle visiting Laurentian on Saturday night at 7 p.m. McGill is hosting five men's games this weekend, in addition to the 22nd annual Redbird Classic Tournament, which features six women's games. The men's events are not part of the official tourney.
