MONTREAL -- Defender Julia Liguori of Montreal scored the game-winner in the 73rd minute as UQAM toppled visiting McGill 2-1 in RSEQ women's soccer at Stade Saputo on Thursday. Played in a constant drizzle, it marked the first intercollegiate contest since the new branding name "U Sports" was announced earlier in the day -- replacing the acronym "CIS" -- by the national governing body for university sport in Canada.

It was a costly loss for the Martlets playoff hopes. They dropped to 4-5-2 and now sit five points behind fourth-place UQAM (6-4-1) with only three games remaining on the schedule. The Citadins hold the tie-breaker after battling McGill to a 0-0 draw in their only other meeting on Sept. 30.

"We're disappointed with the result but not with the way we played," said McGill head coach Jose-Luis Valdes. "We had a couple of chances to tie the game, a couple of crosses and a few corner kicks where we put the ball in dangerous situations for them but we were unlucky and unable to convert."

Martlets striker Tia Lore, a sociology sophomore from Richmond, B.C., opened the scoring in the 28th minute, with her fourth of the season. Cassandra Fafalios of Richmond Hill, Ont., earned a rare goalkeeper's assist on the play.

Laurie Cousineau tied the game at 1-1 in th 70th minute.

The Citadins had an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal and a 5-1 margin in corners, but committed a dozen fouls compared to six by McGill.

Fafalios, a 5-foot-7 political science senior, was saddled with the loss, making six saves on eight shots. UQAM's Jessica Labrasseur stopped four of five at the other end of the pitch.

Both teams next play on Oct. 23, when UQAM (6-4-1) visits sixth-place Concordia (2-7-1) and the Martlets (4-5-2) host No.1-ranked Laval (9-0-1), at 4 p.m. at Percival Molson Stadium.
