Silver shines as Martlet hoopsters dine on Capers

SYDNEY, NS - Jennifer Silver dropped 23 points and Alex Kiss-Rusk collected a "double-double" as McGill defeated the host Cape Breton Capers 71-64 in second round of the Debbie Ruiz Memorial women's basketball tournament, Saturday.

The win, combined with a tournament-opening 71-70 overtime lost to Toronto on Friday, evened the Martlets record on the road trip and upped their overall mark to 6-1 in pre-season play.

Silver, a fourth-year medical student from Montreal, was an efficient 9-for-15 from the field and 5-for-7 from the free-throw line. The 5-foot-11 forward also pulled down seven rebounds and dished out four assists in 36 minutes of court time. Kiss-Rusk, a 6-foot-4 centre from Beaconsfield, Que., scored 12 points and ripped down 11 rebounds, to go along with two blocks and a steal.

Cape Breton led 15-14 after the opening quarter and 36-34 at the half before McGill amped up the pressure in the second half winning the third quarter 14-13 and outscoring the Capers 23-15 in the final frame.

Frederique Potvin, a first-year transfer from Pittsburgh in the NCAA, also impressed for the Martlets, contributing 15 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Junior forward Marie-Love Michel was the only other Martlet to reach double digits in scoring. The physical & health education major had 10 points to go along with a half-dozen assists, six steals and four rebounds.

Alison Keough led the Capers with 23 points matching Silver's game high. Teammate Valentina Primossi was not far behind with 18 points off an 8-of-11 performance from the field. The third-year guard was also 2-for-2 from the charity stripe.

The Martlets had a 36-25 advantage in rebounds and a 2-1 margin in blocks, while Cape Breton won the turnover battle committing 23 miscues to McGill's 25. Both teams had nine steals.

McGill shot 50 per cent from the floor (27/54), went 2-for-6 from three-point range and 15-for-23 from the stripe (65.2). The Capers shot 40 per cent (26/65), failed to sink any of their nine attempts from beyond the arc and went 12-for-17 (70.6) on free-throws.

The Martlets will close out the tourney against UNB at 11 a.m. EST on Sunday (Oct. 16) while Cape Breton will have their last clash against Toronto at 2 p.m. EST.
