Kiss-Rusk named to all-tourney team as Martlet hoopsters handle V-Reds

SYDNEY, NS – Senior Alex Kiss-Rusk registered another patented "double-double" as the McGill women's basketball team cruised to a 57-43 win over UNB, Sunday, in the final round of the Debbie Ruiz Memorial Tournament, held on the campus of Cape Breton University.

The Martlets finished the tournament with a 2-1 record, including Friday's 71-70 overtime loss to Toronto and Saturday's 71-64 win over Cape Breton. The Capers, however, won the tourney with a victory over Toronto, resulting in a three-way tie for first, but CBU won by best points differential.

McGill led 11-7 after the opening quarter and 26-25 at halftime before outscoring the Varsity Reds 31-18 in the final two quarters, including a 15-7 margin in the third stanza.

Kiss-Rusk, a 6-foot-4 centre from Beaconsfield, Que., scored 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds with a pair of blocked shots in 28 minutes of court-time. She shot 6-for-14 from the floor and went 2-for-2 at the foul-line. The 22-year-old psychology senior was named to the all-tournament team after posting three consecutive double-doubles. Over the three games, she scored 41 points and ripped down 32 rebounds, to go along with six assists, a half-dozen blocked shots and a pair of steals. She shot 50 per cent (19/38) from the floor and went 3-for-6 from the line.

Teammate Marie-Love Michel added a game-high 16 points on a hot 7-for-9 shooting performance from the field. The third-year forward was also 2-for-2 from the charity stripe and added eight rebounds and three steals. Rounding out the scoring for McGill was Stephanie Guinois-Cote (11), Jennifer Silver (6), Geraldine Cabillo-Abante (4), Frederique Potvin (3), Ruth Tshikudi-Tshila (2) and Stephanie Mondou (1).

Leading the way for UNB was Hannah Currie and Laura Kaye with nine and eight points, respectively.

McGill had a 36-25 advantage in rebounds and a 12-6 margin in steals but lost the turnover battle 24-20.

The Martlets shot 44.7 per cent from the floor (21/47), went 4-for-10 from three-point range and 11-for-14 from the stripe (78.6). UNB shot an ugly 23.2 per cent (13/56), sunk only two of their 12 attempts from beyond the arc and went 15-for-20 (75) on free-throws.

McGill will now return home to host the Redbird Classic Tournament at Love Competition Hall, Oct. 21-23. They will battle Laurentian, Dalhousie and Waterloo, respectively,
