OTTAWA --
Spencer Bromley scored four times and
Emile Sassone-Lawless added a hat-trick as the McGill started slow but finished strong to defeat Ottawa 14-7 in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association play, Friday, in the nation's capital.
Tied 6-6 in a see-saw battle heading into the fourth quarter, McGill scored eight consecutive goals before the Gee-Gees could reply.
"It was a strange game and way too close for comfort," said McGill head coach
Tim Murdoch. "We were very sloppy, with bad passing and poor shooting. Too lackadaisical and it was just one of those nights were we seemed to be a little off in all facets of the game.. until the fourth quarter. All of a sudden, it was like we played two entirely different games."
Ottawa actually led 2-1 after the opening quarter and McGill took a slim 5-4 lead into the halftime break but the Gee-Gees outscored McGill 2-1 in the third.
Sassone-Lawless added a pair of helpers to finish with five points. Also collecting a five-point soiree was freshman
Liam MacDonald, who scored twice. Other Redmen marksmen included
Goose Bolton (2-2-4),
Alex Linton (2) and
Rhys Burnell, whose goal at 2:36 of the final stanza proved to be the game-winning tally.
William Waesche, McGill's normally reliable goaltender, got the start but was not his usual self and conceded four goals before being replaced at halftime. Sophomore
Conor Manahan came on and proved to be the spark-plug with a number of great saves to collect the win. He was only beaten twice in 32-plus minutes of action. Once McGill had the game in hand, they opted to give rookie
David Pelliccione some much-needed playing time and he played the final 7:38 and was beaten once.
Issac Lavallee took the loss in the Gee-Gees net. He gave up all 14 goals.
Kevin Middaugh led the Gee-Gees with a pair of goals. Singles went to
Cameron Spencer,
Frederick Hartley,
Shayne Snider,
Kyle Stavely and
Scott Taylor.
Originally, the Redmen had planned to stay overnight in Ottawa as they had a scheduled game with Carleton the next day but the Ravens were forced by their administration to forfeit a game due to an off-season violation of school rules. The CUFLA held a lottery to determine which team would benefit from the forfeit and McGill's number came up. As a result, the Redmen improved to 6-1 in the CUFLA East, six points behind division-leading Trent University (9-0) with two games in hand.
