NCAA's No.2-ranked Cougars claw past undermanned McGill in hockey exhibition

HAMDEN, Connecticut – Landon Smith of Greenwood Village, Colorado scored the game-winner on a power-play as the No. 2-ranked Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team eked out a 2-1 victory over McGill in a penalty-filled exhibition game at High Point Solutions Arena, Saturday.

It was the first-ever meeting between McGill -- the oldest operating hockey club in the world now in its 141st season -- and the Bobcats, a 41-year-old NCAA Div. 1 program that has qualified for the NCAA Tournament in each of the past four years, including two appearances in the gold medal game. The start of the game was delayed by 30-minutes due to a sudden family matter related to players on the McGill roster.

Senior K.J. Tiefenwerth of Bellmore, N.Y., scored the game's first goal at 14:01 of the opening frame. But only 53 seconds into the middle period, McGill rookie Guillaume Gauthier converted a pass from Jerome Verrier and blasted a shot through traffic for his first collegiate marker to knot the score.

The game featured 74 minutes in penalties, 56 of them by McGill, which spent 20 minutes and 15 seconds shorthanded. The Redmen, who took a pair of five-minute majors, killed off eight of nine power-play situations. By comparison, McGill had only three man-advantage opportunities, coming-up empty each time.

"Our penalty-kill unit was outstanding and made their power-play looked tired," said McGill head coach Kelly Nobes. "I was really proud of our guys today, we showed a ton of character, based on the events earlier in the day and the fact that we were shorthanded for a large part of the game. It says something when you tire out the other team's power-play."

The Bobcats took advantage of all their power plays to rack up a 40-16 edge in shots but had a difficult time solving McGill goaltender Louis-Philip Guindon, a freshman from Montreal, who was very sharp and made 38 saves in a losing cause.

All three goalies on the Bobcats' roster saw a period of action, with Chris Truehl picking up the win after stopping all seven shots over the final 20 minutes. Freshman Andrew Shortridge merited the start in his first collegiate appearance and was called upon to make just four saves in the first period. He gave way to junior Sean Lawrence, who stopped four of five shots.

McGill, which dropped to 3-3 in exhibition play, travels to Troy, N.Y. on Sunday for their final preseason game, against the RPI Engineers at 4 p.m. Quinnipiac (1-0) hosts Northeastern for a two-game non-conference series, Oct. 7-8.
