Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Perry Laskaris (RPI) & Earl Zukerman (McGill)

NCAA's Engineers construct potent power-play to blank hockey Redmen

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute men's hockey team scored a goal in each period and sophomore goaltender Chase Perry made 26 saves en route to a 3-0 victory over McGill University, in exhibition action from the Houston Field House on Sunday afternoon.

The Redmen were playing with a heavy heart after learning of tragic death of Dr. Sylvain Boutet -- father to McGill hockey players Étienne and Jasmin Boutet -- who was 55 and collapsed of an apparent heart attack on Saturday, while mountain-biking in Stoneham, near the family home in St. Nicolas, Que.

The penalty-plagued game featured 85 minutes in penalties, including 45 to the Engineers who went 2-for-9 with the man-advantage, scoring both on 5-on-3 situations. McGill went an uncharacteristic 0-for-13 on the power-play.

Senior Riley Bourbonnais of Rochester, N.Y., got the scoring started at 6:43 of the first period, sticking home a rebound from left side of the crease. Junior Bradley Bell of Sudbury, Ont., found classmate Viktor Liljegren, a native of Sweden, for a shot that caromed to Bourbonnais for the one-time finish.

Freshman Jacob Hayhurst of Missassauga, Ont., capitalized on the two-man advantage, when he ripped home a shot from the high slot at the 18:43 mark of the second period. Assists went to Liljegren and junior Mike Prapavessis of Oakville, Ont.

RPI capped the scoring with another 5-on-3 power play goal at 2:02 of the third, on another shot from the top of the zone. Sophomore Jesper Ohrvall of Sweden found classmate Evan Tironese of Quilicum Beach, B.C. open at the blue line and he cranked a shot past McGill senior netminder Jacob Gervais-Chouinard of Sherbrooke, Que.

Goalie Chase Perry, a freshman from St. Paul, Min., picked up the win in net, making five saves in the first period, 14 in the second and seven in the third. Gervais-Chouinard had 40 stops, including 16 in the second period.

Both teams begin their regular season next weekend. RPI travels to Maine for a two-game series, beginning on Friday. The Redmen take on RMC on Friday (7pm) in Kingston, Ont., then return home to host UOIT in the McGill home opener.
