MONTREAL -- Striker
Audrey-Ann Coughlan of Longueuil, Que., continued her assault on opposition goalkeepers with a hat-trick as the McGill University women's soccer team quadrupled the UQAM Citadins 4-1 in RSEQ conference play at Stade Saputo, Sunday.
In men's soccer, a veteran Citadins team easily disposed of the young Redmen squad 5-1.
Coughlan, a 20-year-old science sophomore majoring in kinesiology, opened her scoring onslaught just four minutes after the opening whistle. She converted a pass from team captain
Rebecca Green. She made it 2-0 with what proved to be the game-winner, in the 24th minute and completed her hat-trick with the game's final goal in the 76th minute. The 5-foot-6 forward is among league leaders with seven goals in four regular season contests.
"Coughlan showed up ready to play in training camp," said McGill head coach
Jose-Luis Valdes, who also coached her with the Quebec provincial team. "She was injured at the start of the season last year but returned in August training camp physically fit and knowing what to expect. We could see it during practice. She is not only one of our better players but also wants to score and when she misses on a set play in practice, you can sense her frustration. She wants to do better and knows that she can. Her motivation is high and things are working out well for her."
Tia Lore, a freshman fom Richmond, B.C., rounded out the McGill scoring, making it 3-1 in the 37th minute and assisted the Coughlan's last marker.
Chloé Malette scored the lone UQAM goal in the the final minute of the first half.
The teams were even in both shots on goal (6-6) and corner kicks (4-4). it was a physical affair that featured a combined 24 fouls and five cards, including an ejection to UQAM's
Dafné Roldan in the 58th minute.
Goalkeeper
Sarah Dubois collected the victory for McGill with five saves on six shots. At the other end of the pitch, former McGill 'keeper
Valérie Labbé took the loss, conceding four goals on six shots.
