MONTREAL -- A costly own goal paved the way for the visiting Western Mustangs to force penalty kicks and come away with a 3-2 victory over McGill in the women's final of the Old Four soccer tournament at Percival Molson Stadium, Sunday. The teams finished regulation time at 2-2 but Western claimed the shootout session 5-3.
McGill opened the scoring when freshman
Tia Lore of Richmond, B.C., connected in the final minute of the first half but Western evened the count in the 83
rd minute when third-year defender
Anais Robert accidently redirected a clearing attempt into her own net.
However, the Martlets appeared to overcome that miscue just four minutes later when sophomore striker
Audrey-Ann Coughlin of Longueuil, Que., tallied what appeared to be the game-winner. But the Mustangs forced penalty-kicks when veteran
Paige Howard of Waterloo, Ont., struck pay-dirt two minutes into injury time.
In the shootout, all five Western shooters connected, including
Stephanie Di Tella, goalkeeper
Tori Edgar,
Grace Grafham,
Paige Howard and
Amanda Boyle.
McGill was successful on three of their four shots, with goals coming from the feet of
Sarah-Maude Bouchard-Canuel,
Margaux Sleckman and
Anais Robert. Rookie midfielder
Sophie Barlos was stopped on the third McGill attempt.
Edgar, a senior from Oakville, Ont., was credited with two saves and collected the win between the pipes for Western. At the other end of the pitch,
Sarah Dubois, a junior from Edmonton, started and saved both shots against before being replaced by senior
Cassandra Fafalios in the 60th minute. Fafalios was beaten twice on seven shots and was saddled with the loss for the Martlets.
The Mustangs, which improved to 2-1 against CIS teams, open the regular season campaign at Brock on Aug. 29.
McGill, which owns a 1-1 record in preseason play, will now head across the border for a pair of scrimmages against NCAA teams. The Martlets play the Yale University Bulldogs in New Haven, Conn., on Aug. 25 at 7 p.m., followed by a morning game in Worcester, Mass., on Aug. 28 against the Assumption College Greyhounds.
