OLD FOUR SOCCER TOURNEY: De Santis divides and conquers as Redmen best Blues

Alex De Santis

MONTREAL -- A first-half goal by Alexandre De Santis proved to be the difference as the McGill Redmen edged Toronto 1-0 and advanced to the Old Four Tournament championship in men's soccer at Molson Stadium, Saturday.

The Varsity Blues held a 6-4 advantage in shots on net but were unable to penetrate winning goalkeeper Thomas Daechsel, a 5-foot-10 senior from Kingston, Ont., who registered six saves for the shutout.

De Santis, a third-year midfielder from St. Mathias sur Richelieu, Que., beat U of T netminder Rab Bruce-Lockhart in the 20th minute of play.

The Redmen (1-0) will confront Western (1-0) in Sunday's final, slated for 4:15 p.m. The Mustangs advanced after a 2-0 preliminary round victory over Queen's. Toronto (0-1) will take on the Gaels (0-1) in the men's consolation contest at 12 noon.
