Struggling soccer Redmen stun and run against UQTR; knock undefeated Pats off perch

MONTREAL -- A pair of second-half markers, including a costly own goal proved to be the difference as sixth-place McGill stunned the division-leading UQTR Patriotes 2-0 in men's university soccer at Percival Molson Stadium, Sunday.

The result kept McGill's diminishing playoff hopes alive and knocked the Pats off their perch atop the RSEQ standings.

It was a rough and tumble affair, featuring eight cards issued, two of which results in the expulsion of UQTR midfielder Jeremy Alain, who was tossed in the 86th minute, forcing the Pats to play one-man short for the last few minutes.

After a sccoreless first half, McGill broke the ice in the 53rd minute of play when UQTR defender Jean-Simon Cournoyer accidently directed the ball past his surprised goalkeeper David Lewis-Lamoureux, for an own goal.

Some 25 minutes later, the Redmen took a commanding lead when junior midfielder Valentin Radevich, a native of Belarus, converted a pass from Michael McIntyre of Pte. Claire, Que.

Max Leblond, a poloitical science senior from France, was called upon to make just one save to earn his second shutout of the season. At the other end of the pitch, Lewis-Lamoureux made seven saves in a losing cause.

It was only the second victory of the season for McGill, which improved to 2-5-0 in the seven-team Quebec league. With six games remaining before playoffs, the Redmen are just three points behoind fourth-place Laval (3-4-0), which currently has a grip on the fourth and final playoff berth in the seven-team RSEQ conference. McGill will host fifth-place Concordia in a key confrontation, Friday, Oct. 16 (8:30 pm) at Molson Stadium. The Redmen will be looking to avenge an embassing season-opening 4-0 loss to the Stingers on Sept. 16.

UQTR, which now sits in second place with a 5-1-1 record, will host last-place Sherbrooke (0-6-0) on Oct. 16.
