Martlets ruffle Ravens feathers in overtime hoops thriller

Box Score
MONTREAL – Jennifer Silver and Mariam Sylla scored 18 points apiece as the Martlets overcame a fourth quarter collapse to beat Carleton 74-70 in a CIS women's preseason basketball overtime thriller at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.

McGill, which led 34-27 at halftime and 67-61 with a minute and a half remaining, fell apart down the stretch giving the Ravens a chance to extend the game. Lindsay Heather took advantage of the opportunity and swished a jumper with nine seconds remaining to send it to overtime. The Martlets were able to persevere however, holding Carleton to just three points in overtime while scoring seven on route to victory.

Silver, a 5-foot-11 forward from Montreal, QC shot an efficient 8-for-13 from the floor and made two of four from the free-throw line. The junior added four rebounds, two steals and one block.

Sylla, the back-to-back RSEQ player of the year, had to work a little harder for her points as she was 4-for-12 from the field but visited the charity stripe 13 times knocking down 10 attempts. The native of Guinea also tacked on five rebounds and two steals.

Not to be outdone was freshmen teammate Gladys Hakizimana, who registered 17 points in a game high 34 minutes.  The 5-foot-7 guard from College Montmorency and reigning CEGEP most valuable player went 5-for-9 from the floor including a 3-for-6 performance from beyond the arc and was perfect from the foul line going 4-for-4.

The Ravens had their own three-headed monster in Stephanie Carr, Heather Lindsay and Nicole Gilmore who all reached double figures tailing 21, 19 and 12 points, respectively.

McGill, which had a 27-20 margin in rebounds and 22-13 advantage in turnovers, shot 37.5 per cent from the field, 22.2 from the arc and 81.4 from the line. They had 10 more trips to the line than the Ravens, which might have been the difference as Carelton shot the ball extremely well going 42.3, 40 and 94.1, respectively.

This was the Martlets first CIS action of the year as their prior preseason games only included NCAA and international opponents. They now sit 3-5 and will shift their focus towards the 21st annual Redbird Classic, which sees the Victoria Vikings, Thompson River Wolfpack, and Laurier Golden Hawks stroll into town.
