OTTAWA – Francois Bourque, a basketball player from McGill University, was among the Top Eight Academic All-Canadians for the 2014-2015 season, announced Wednesday by Canadian Interuniversity Sport. A native of Terrebonne, Que., the third-year management student who majors in accounting, becomes the 21st student-athlete in 22 years selected from McGill to represent the Quebec conference since this program was initiated in 1994.

The elite group will be honoured in Ottawa on November 16, when his Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, presents the third annual Governor General's Academic All-Canadian Commendation to the eight recipients during a ceremony at Rideau Hall, his official residence.
 
Every year, a growing number of CIS student-athletes are recognized as Academic All-Canadians, having maintained an average of 80 per cent or better over the academic year while competing for one - or more - of their university's varsity teams.
 
In 2014-15, a record 3,101 students achieved the prestigious status, eclipsing the previous mark of 2,861 set a year ago.
 
No less than nine CIS member universities – four more than the previous year - had over 100 Academic All-Canadians last year, including Western (145), Alberta (128), Queen's (125), Laval (110), Calgary (108), Acadia (107), Toronto (104), Waterloo (104) and Manitoba (100). McGill (96) rounded out the national top 10.
 
Among these outstanding individuals, one female and one male student-athlete from each of the four CIS regional associations are selected annually to make up the Top Eight.

The recipients from Atlantic University Sport (AUS) are Katie Ross of Bedford, N.S., a two-sport athlete (soccer / basketball) and kinesiology student from Acadia University, and Cole Grbavac (Calgary), a hockey player and business administration student from St. Francis Xavier University.

The winners from Ontario University Athletics (OUA) are Sasha Gollish (Toronto), a track and field athlete and PHD student from the University of Toronto, and Austin Kennedy (Windsor, Ont.), a football player and business student from the University of Windsor.
 
Last but not least, the Canada West Universities Athletic Association recipients are basketball player Sarah Wierks (Chilliwack, B.C.), a kinesiology student from the University of the Fraser Valley, as well as football player Andrew Buckley (Calgary), also a kinesiology student from the University of Calgary.
 
"The record number of Academic All-Canadians speaks volume about the quality of our student-athletes, but also our coaches, support staff and our universities," said Graham Brown, chief executive officer of CIS. "To be selected among 11,500 of their peers is an achievement these exceptional student-athletes should be extremely proud of. They represent the very best of what university sport is all about."
 
Bourque, who was born in Montreal and raised in the east-end suburb of Terrebonne, was a star from day one with the basketball Redmen. After being named to the RSEQ all-rookie team and leading McGill to the conference title in 2013-14, the 6-foot-6, 197-pound forward was voted MVP of the Quebec league and a CIS All-Canadian in his second season, which was capped with the Uldis Auders Memorial Trophy presented to the school's top sophomore student-athlete.   
 
Bourque has been as successful in the classroom since the fall of 2013, meriting CIS Academic All-Canadian status and a selection to the Principal's Student-Athlete Honour Roll in each of his first two years at McGill, while also receiving an Academic Excellence Bursary from the Fondation de l'athlète d'excellence du Québec in 2014-15. An accounting major in the Desautels faculty of management, he earned a 3.72 cumulative grade-point average (out of 4.0), including a superb 3.92 in the 2015 winter semester.
 
"We're extremely proud of Frank and what he has accomplished, both on and off the court," said McGill men's basketball head coach David DeAveiro. "It's quite a challenge to study in a language that's not his mother tongue. He worked really hard to get into the faculty of management, so his prime focus has been his academics, as well as the time that we ask him to commit to the team. He's a prime example of what a student-athlete is and should be. He comes to compete every day and brings consistency with hard work."

Le mcgillois François Bourque honoré parmi le Top 8 académique de SIC
 

OTTAWA – François Bourque, un joueur de basket-ball pour l'Université McGill, était dévoilé mercredi parmi les « Top 8 académique » étudiants athlètes sélectionnés par Sport interuniversitaire canadien pour la saison 2014-2015. Originaire de Terrebonne, Qué., l'étudiant de gestion qui specialise dans la comptabilité, devient le 21e mcgillois en 22 ans d'etre sélectionnés pour représenter la Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec puisque ce programme a été lancé en 1994.

Les heureux élus seront honorés à Ottawa le 16 novembre, alors que son Excellence le très honorable David Johnston, gouverneur général du Canada, procédera à la remise de la troisième Mention d'honneur du gouverneur général pour l'excellence sportive et académique aux huit récipiendaires, lors d'une cérémonie à Rideau Hall, sa résidence officielle.
 
Chaque année, un nombre croissant d'étudiantes et étudiants athlètes de SIC méritent le statut d'étoiles académiques canadiennes après avoir conservé une moyenne de 80% ou plus au cours d'une année d'études tout en ayant porté les couleurs de l'une – ou plusieurs - des équipes sportives de leur université.
 
En 2014-2015, un nombre record de 3101 étudiants ont atteint ce standard d'excellence, éclipsant le précédent sommet de 2861 établi l'an dernier.
 
Pas moins de neuf institutions membres de SIC – quatre de plus que l'année précédente - comptaient au moins 100 étoiles académiques canadiennes l'année dernière, soit Western (145), Alberta (128), Queen's (125), Laval (110), Calgary (108), Acadia (107), Toronto (104), Waterloo (104) et Manitoba (100). McGill (96) a complété le top 10 canadien.
 
Parmi ces individus exceptionnels, une étudiante et un étudiant provenant de chacune des quatre associations régionales de SIC sont retenus annuellement au sein du « Top 8 ».
 
A part de Bourque, l'autre élu en provenance du RSEQ, est Katia Forcier (Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Qué.), une volleyeuse et étudiante en audiologie à l'Université de Montréal..
 
Du côté de Sport universitaire de l'Atlantique (SUA) pour 2014-2015 sont Katie Ross (Bedford, N.-É.), une athlète multisports (soccer / basketball) et étudiante en kinésiologie à l'Université Acadia, et Cole Grbavac (Calgary), un hockeyeur et étudiant en administration des affaires à l'Université StFX.

 Les récipiendaires de Sports universitaires de l'Ontario (SUO) sont Sasha Gollish (Toronto) une vedette d'athlétisme et étudiante au doctorat à l'Université de Toronto, de même qu'Austin Kennedy (Windsor, Ont.), un footballeur et étudiant en affaires à l'Université de Windsor.
 
Finalement, l'Association sportive universitaire de l'Ouest canadien (ASUOC) est représentée par la basketteuse Sarah Wierks (Chilliwack, C.-B.), une étudiante en kinésiologie à l'Université Fraser Valley, puis par le footballeur Andrew Buckley (Calgary), lui aussi étudiant en kinésiologie à l'Université de Calgary.

Né à Montréal et ayant grandi en banlieue à Terrebonne, François Bourque s'est imposé dès ses débuts avec la formation de basketball des Redmen. Après avoir été choisi sur l'équipe d'étoiles des recrues du RSEQ et avoir mené McGill à la conquête du titre de la conférence en 2013-2014, l'ailier de 6 pieds 6 a été nommé joueur par excellence de la ligue québécoise et retenu parmi les étoiles canadiennes à sa deuxième saison, au terme de laquelle il a également reçu le trophée commémoratif Uldis Auders présenté au meilleur étudiant-athlète de deuxième année de l'institution.
 
Bourque s'est démarqué tout autant dans la salle de classe depuis l'automne 2013, lui qui a mérité une place au Tableau d'honneur de SIC et sur la liste d'honneur du recteur à chacune de ses deux premières années à McGill, en plus de recevoir une bourse d'excellence académique de la Fondation de l'athlète d'excellence du Québec en 2014-2015. L'étudiant en comptabilité présente une moyenne cumulative de 3,72 sur une échelle de 4,0, incluant une superbe moyenne de 3,92 au trimestre d'hiver 2015.
 
« Nous sommes extrêmement fiers de Frank et de ce qu'il a accompli, tant sur le plan sportif qu'à l'extérieur du court, a dit l'entraîneur-chef de l'équipe masculine de basketball de McGill, David DeAveiro. Étudier dans une langue autre que sa langue maternelle représente un défi considérable. Il a trimé dur afin d'être accepté à la faculté de gestion, alors il se consacre principalement sur ses études, en plus du temps que nous lui demandons d'investir dans notre équipe. Il est l'exemple parfait de ce que devrait être un étudiant-athlète. Sur le terrain, il donne toujours le meilleur de lui-même et fait preuve de constance grâce à son travail acharné. »
