Bishop's bewitched, bothered and bewildered by soccer Martlets

LENNOXVILLE, Que -- Perhaps it wasn't as classic a performance as Pal Joey, the award-winning 1940s musical by Rodgers and Hart, but the McGill women's soccer team came away with a 2-0 road win over Bishop's at Coulter Field, Friday.

The winless Gaiters were bewitched by an own goal in just the sixth minute of play, which proved to be the bothersome difference needed for a bewildering McGill victory. Another early goal -- just four minutes after the halftime break on a successful penalty kick by Margaux Sleckman -- served as an insurance marker. She was picked by the Gaiters coach as McGill's player of the game.

"We were looking to get the three points in the standings and that's what we got," said McGill head coach Jose-Luis Valdes about his troops, who had an 18-4 advantage in shots toward the net and a 6-0 margin in corner kicks. "They pressured us quite well up high but as soon as we entered their zone, they dropped really low and played a tight defensive shell. This made it more difficult to penetrate because there was so much traffic."

McGill goalkeeper Sarah Dubois made four saves for the shutout. At the other end of the pitch, beleaguered Gaiters goalie Rebecca Bensimon was credited with eight saves in a losing cause and merited player-of-the-game honours from the Martlets coaching staff.

It was McGill's first victory in three games but more importantly, improved their record to 4-2-1 in the eight-team RSEQ conference. With seven games remaining in the season, the Martlets are perched in the fourth and final playoff berth, two points behind undefeated Montreal (4-0-3) and seven ahead of Concordia (2-4-1).

McGill will host last-place UQTR (0-6-1) on Sunday (Oct.. 4). Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m., at Percival Molson Stadium, following the men's game which is slated for a 4 p.m. start. The winless Gaiters women, who dropped to 0-5-2, will have their hands full when they host second-place Sherbrooke (5-1-1) on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
