MONTREAL --
Audrey-Ann Coughlan, a striker from Longueuil, Que., scored twice for McGill as the soccer Martlets edged visiting Concordia 2-1 at Percival Molson Stadium, Friday.
The result extended McGill's undefeated streak to 3-0-1 since their last loss more than a month ago, a surprising 3-1 setback to Sherbrooke on Sept. 13.
"Coughlan has been a dangerous player all season," said McGill head coach
Jose-Luis Valdes of the kinesiology sophomore who has 10 of the team's 18 goals this season and has his pay-dirt in five of their nine conference games. "She committed to a good off-season training program, showed up in great shape and is making a difference regularly."
Coughlan's first goal of the evening was a beauty in the 31
st minute of play. Stationed on the left-handed side of the field for a corner, the right-footed sniper scored directly off her kick, curving her shot into Stingers goalkeeper
Maria Kaperonis , who bobbled the ball and watched in horror as it crossed the goal line.
Laura Lamontangue tied the score in the 76
th minute but Coughlan wasted no time getting McGill back on top 10 minutes later, converting a pass from team captain
Rebecca Green of Green's Habour, Nfld.
"We controled the game possession-wise and were never really in danger," said a confident Valdes, whose troops had an 8-4 advantage in shots but were tied 1-1 with less than five minutes remaining. "The difference this year is that team is more mature and mentally stronger to handle a difficult situation (like giving up a late tying goal like today) and bouncing back for a win."
McGill 'keeper
Sarah Dubois, a chemical engineering junior from Edmonton, recorded three saves and improved her umblemished record to 4-0 in four starts. For Concordia, Kaperonis turned aside six of eight shots in a losing cause.
The Martlets are now 6-2-1 in league play and currently sit third of eight teams in the RSEQ standings, only four points behind division-leading Laval (7-0-2) and three points in arrears of second-place Sherbrooke (7-1-1). With five contests remaining before playoffs, McGill travels to Sherbrooke for a crucial rendez-vous on Sunday afternoon (2 pm) where they will be looking to avenge that early season home-field loss to the Vert & Or.
